1861 census lookup GOTH
« on: Friday 31 December 04 14:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I am wondering whether anyone has any information prior to 1867 regarding Thomas Goth who was born in Sedbergh, York in 1849.  The 1861 census would be ideal.

Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

I wasn't holding out much hope.  Apparently they moved around a lot as his father was a methodist minister.  Is there anything in 1851?

Thanks

Hi,

are you interested in the 1851 census?

I hope to be visiting Sedbergh soon and if so could have a look in the family history society for you.

I've looked through the 1851, 1861 census for Sedbergh and  the births in the town. I can't see any reference to the name Goth.
I'll have another look to make sure the Methodist births aren't recorded separately.

Was he born in the town of Sedbergh, or is there any other village / area ?

Thanks for your help.  I remember a reference made to Dent in Yorkshire on some of the documents, not sure if he was born there.  There is also a possibility that the name was transcribed incorrectly.

I remember seeing the name Goth on the Dent census records whilst I was looking through for someone else, I think they were farmers and presumably a local family. This didn't seem to fit in with your family - as you said the father was a methodist minister and moved around.

I'll have a look through the Dent 1851 census  for you when I get up there again.

Thanks for this.  He wasn't always a Methodist Minister, a lot of the family were farmers from Yorkshire / Lancashire so it could be them.

Thanks again
