Let me know if you think these help you as I've made notes form the 1861 census as well.

I can also look further for you in the parish records for births, marriages etc if any of these are of interest.
Do you have the names of your Thomas Goth's parents? - it may help if I look again.

Thanks for this.  I don't recognise any names here but Goth isn't that popular so I have a feeling they will be connected somewhere.  Unfortunately I don't have the names of Thomas' parents, but the 1861 census might be useful too.

These are the Goth's on the 1861 census for Dent

the details below in forname order and show forname, age, and house address or area of Dent

Agnes   79   Haycote
Agnes   60   Main Street Farmhouse
Dorothy   3   Mill Beck
Elizabeth    33   East Banks
Elizabeth   25    Mill Beck
Faucett?   1   Mill Beck
Henry   32   Haycote
Isabella   1   East Banks
James   48   Rawbanks
John   30   East banks
John   3   East banks
John   34   Mill Beck
John G    56    Main Street Farmhouse
Leonard   27   Dent Town
Richard   57   Dent Town
Richard   38   Haycote
Richard   5   Mill beck
Thomas   44   Haycote
Thomas   11   Main Street Farmhouse
William   79   Haycote
William   46   Haycote

As your looking for  Thomas born 1849  in Sedbergh the detail for him and his address is:-
John G Goth Head, married, aged 56, Farmer of 7 acres and sexton, born Dent
Agnes, wife aged 60, born Dent
Thomas, grandson aged 11 scholar aged 11

on the 1871 census I found:-
John G Goth aged 66 farmer of 16 acres
Annas wife aged 70 (this could be a misreading of Agnes)
Thomas, grandson, unmarried aged 21, labourer

Thomas is not on the 1881 census in Dent, looking on the 1881 census it may be him in Ashton Under Lyne. Not a suprise he left as many people had to,  to find work.

Please also note that Sedbergh includes Dent if you look on freebmd. - they show only one Thomas Goth born 1849. If you think this is the right person and order the certificate it will tell you who his parents were.

If you don't mind me asking - what information do you have that his father was a methodist minister - it may just help whilst I'm looking through documents

Hope this helps,  let me know if you want any of the census records copying and sending to you or if you want more detail for any of the Goth's.

Thanks for the info. Some of the names look familiar on this list.  I was told that someone related was a methodist minister but I am not sure who.  It's possible that it's just some old family myth!

Thanks for the info on Thomas' parents it's really useful.  It's been difficult to get hold of as apparently they moved around quite a lot.

Many thanks

Hi,

there's certainly a link to the Methodists - if you look at the web site below and follow it through England then Lancashire then Dent and search on surname Goth you will see some of the Goth's birth's are recorded as Methodist.

let me know if you want anything more looking up as I'll be going back to Sedbergh in a few weeks.
