Hope this is the right board to post to?

I'm looking for a birth in 1881 or 1883 of my grandfather.  It's rather complicated: he gave his name at various times as James Aloysius Smith and John Arthur Shaw; he also apparently used the surname O'Connell.  He had a Canadian passport and said at various times that he was born in Ottawa, but he also said he was born in Tipperary.

Any ideas?!  Can anyone help with the (perhaps) Tipperary connection?!

Have you tried the North Tipperary Genealogy and Heritages Services.
A search shows Robert Ryan birth dates 1821 1822 1830. But there is no match with father's name Anthony.
The Bru Boru Centre for Tipperary South also has Robert Ryan births 1824 and 1837 but no match with a father Anthony.

Looking for a Ryan in Tipperary is literally more difficult than looking for a needle in a haystack.

First thing you need is the family nickname. Every Ryan family in Tipperary has a nickname. If you are lucky that will narrow your search to a geographical area. Some of the nicknames are not complimentary by sound but they will be understood by Tipperary people.

 I am looking for information on the Bouchier family who lived in Coalbrook Tipperary. (Near New Birmingham). My Father was born there on 13th Oct 1942/3, to Thomas and Alice (nee McGary) he was one of 7 surviving children, I would love to trace this line as far back as possible.
