Hyde MI's/1841 census - David Metcalf d. 1848
« on: Thursday 22 November 07 19:13 GMT (UK) »
David Metcalf died 16 May 1848 at his home in Hyde, aged 78 (info from the Guardian archive). He was a grandson of Blind Jack Metcalf the road maker, and he was born in Saddleworth in early 1770 son of Christopher Metcalf and Jane (nee Leach).

If anyone has MI's for Hyde could they look him up please?

If anyone can find him on the 1841 census that would be fantastic. (I don't think its the 60 year old cotton weaver - this one should be showing up as aged 70).

This is one of those odd ones where I know when and where he was born and I know when and where he died but I don't know anything at all about his life.

He had siblings all born in Saddleworth, with  surnames varying in the IGI - Medcalf, Metcalfe, Medcalf, Medcalff:

Dolly 28/03/1773
Christopher 16/08/1777
Joseph 25/12/1779
Joseph 5/12/1781
Mally Benson 13/01/1782
James 20/04/1783
Tabby 21/05/1786
Jonathan Leech 9/05/1758

There are some christian names that recur in Blind Jack Metcalf's descendants: Dorothy or Dolly (after his wife Dorothy Benson) ; Tabitha, John, Ellen, David (after his children), and Joseph.

Hi Shaun

I think that 60 year old might actually be him??

Have found this info (infuriating OWT with no contact name  :P)

David METCALF
wife: Ann  - born 1780 in Werneth,Cheshire
ISSUE:
David  - born 8 Jun 1800  Hyde
John  - born 5 Jul 1802  Hyde Gee Cross
Dolly  - born 1 May 1805  Hyde
Henry  - born 24 Apr 1806 Hyde
Joseph - born  1809  Hyde
Elizabeth  - born 24 Feb 1811  Hyde
Betty - born 21 Mar 1813 Hyde
June - born  1814 Hyde
then a gap to:
Ann - born 1824 Hyde

After looking at various websites with  info on "Blind Jack" and data on others of his children....It's the names of the children above - particulary (but not only Dolly)! Seeing as Blind Jack's wife was Dorothy "Dolly"....

Apparently the daughter June above, married a Sam SWINDELL .and had a son James born 1841 Hyde.

That 1841 household  for the 60 year old......
HO107 / Piece 111 /  Book: 7 / Folio: 11; Pg 17
Hornby Bridge Hovily Bridge
David METCALF 60 (1781)
Ann 60 (1781)
Betty 25 (1816)
Joseph 30 (1811)
James 20 (1821)
Ann 20 (1821)
/
Jane WRIGLEY 15
Sam SWINDEL 20
Jane SWINDEL 25  (1816)
James SWINDEL 6 months

Hmmm?

Cheers  ;D

exit: my mistake; corrected the name of 1841 Census address after a closer look with BOTH eyes open at same time...... 8)

Hi again Shaun

You've probably recognized the 'connection'  ... but this website:

http://members.aol.com/victoroly/BlindJack.htm
which lists the JACKSON children of Jack's daughter Tabitha - all baptised at Gee Cross Hyde.

Cheers

Ambly,

Yes I think you might have something there - and I am already in close contact with the owners of that site you mentioned.

Are those births from the IGI? What's an OWT?

I found Dolly (1805)'s baptism on BMDregisters.co.uk - haven't looked for the others yet...

Hi Shaun

I'll PM you re OWT  ;D

Pretty sure now, the core of the METCALF on the OWT  tree is  Annie Metcalf b 1864 Hyde to William Metcalf b 1821, d 1876 Hyde,. who is listed as:
the son of David Metcalf b 1800, d 1867 Hyde,
grandson of David (b?-d?) and Ann (b1780 Werther - d?)

Annie went to Boston MA and married a BOSTOCK.......

Just to carry on from that 1841, in brief:

By 1851, the Ann of 1841 was a widow age 71 born Werneth, still living at Hovily Bridge....with unmarrried daughters Betty 39, Ann 27 and widowed son Joseph 42. Her son in law, Sam SWINDELLS and and  his wife (named as her daughter) June SWINDELLS and their son James are also in the household,
(Some may thing the surname is MATERELLE   ;)  ;), but definitely METCALFE!)
HO107/ Piece: 2154/ Folio: 394/ Pg 11

in 1861, looks like Ann the mother of 1841, 1851 has died - her METCALF children:
unmarried Elixabeth 50 and  Ann 41, widowed son  Joseph 53, widow daughter Jane SWINDELLS and Jane's son James are all together in Randle Row, Hyde (next to very close to or next to Brook House/Brook Street)
RG9; Piece: 2558; Folio: 124; Page: 24

In 1871, James SWINDELLS is head of a house which includes his mother Jane and Uncle Joseph.

Also, James METCALF b abt 1819  is on the Census, with a wife named Ann, too, living near the others (I think he was on Randle Row aswell , in 1861)

The IGI has this to parents David METCALF and Ann:
Are they one family of siblings?

Christopher  chr 21 OCT 1798 Mottram In Longdendale - married  Margaret? 1841, 1851
David Birth: 9 Apr 1800 , chr 8 Jun 1800 Gee Cross
John 5 Jul 1802 , chr 5 Jul 1802 Gee Cross
Dolly chr 1 May 1805 Old Chapel-Presbyterian, Dukinfield
Henry 11 Apr 1806 , chr 24 Apr 1806 Gee Cross
Joseph 11 Jan 1809 , chr 3 mar 1809 Gee Cross
Elizabeth 23 Feb 1811 24 Feb  1811 Gee Cross (probably died at or near birth?)
Betty 12 Feb 1813 21 Mar  1813 Gee Cross
Jane 07 FEB 1815 , chr 18 Feb 1815 Gee Cross
James 17 APR 1818 , chr 12 Jun 1818 Gee Cross
Ann 2 Feb 1820 , chr 4 Mar 1820 Gee Cross

Noting Dolly & CHristopher, are not baptised in Gee Cross....

In the 1841 and 1851 Census is a Christopher METCALFE/MEDCALFE b abt 1798 Hyde. His wife was Margaret/Peggy - eldest daughter named Ann.  He was in the Dukinfield area. He looks like the birth above.....he was an Overlooker Weaver.

I thought following them about may lead to one person in one house which may link to the family members of Jack  that you do know of........ .if you want full details of any of the above,  please let me/us know  ;D

Also  on IGI - possibility:
David MIDCALF married Ann ROWBOTHAM  -  11 Sep 1797
St Mary'S, Stockport

And some info on Hoviley Bridge

Ambly - I have  tried 3 times to post a reply  - they just disappear into hyperspace!

OWT is one world tree?

Thanks a lot for digging all this out for me. I agree it does look as though this is the right David Metcalf.

Hyde Gee Cross features prominently in the baptisms of his children as it does for the Jackson and Cartwright cousins mentioned on Gay and Mike Oliver's website.

Lots to digest here - thanks again.

Message to Shaun J and Ambly,

I did some look ups on lots of the new baptisms and marriages found of the IGI last week and sent off some e-mails last night.  Can you confirm whether you got them or not, since I am having trouble with AOL again and some of my mail has either been ending up in my spam box or in the ether somewhere.

PS Nouchke is my Belgian nickname
