Python
« on: Thursday 22 November 07 18:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi all, I have just received copies of my fathers military records and it states that on 19/4/46 he embarked Bombay (Python) for U.K. and S.O.S. India Command w.e.f. Was Python the name of the ship? Also at times it states his unit as x list. Does anyone know what it means. Cheers, Phil.

Hi Phil i recieved my Fathers service record about 3 years ago and i asked the same same question after a lot of research found that PYTHON means he no longer had to serve overseas after the date from when he embarked from Bombay S.O.S (struck off strength) W.E.F (with effect from) x list i think he might of spent time in hospital sick thats where the s.o.s may come from but python  definately means he no longer had to serve over seas from the date he embarked from Bombay if you need further assistance let me know

                                                          Thanks Frank

Thanks for that Frank. I wonder if there is a list of ships involved in bringing them home with dates on which they sailed. The records say from Ballard pier. Cheers Phil.

Hi Phil
Just seen this post.
PYTHON was the name of a repatriation fo long serving personnel abroad started circa 1945 I was tempory employed in our Office after returning from Normandy in Aug 44. Doing age & service release (a combination of Age at call up and how long sevice. Entered in Pay Book.(Mine was 44). Certain higher numbers were used for python and ther e was also class "B" early release depending on pre-war job. This stated after VE Day. In Dec 45 I went to Germany and was still doing this for quie some time then I was demobbed in Dec 1946. most 44 were demmobbed at that time.
