I thought it might be a bad spelling of Shoebury....

but the more I look.....

it definitely starts Sto....and does appear to end...... bury

STO???BURY......it is probably S Tolesbury as in South Tollesbury
he just said Essex in 1881 ...is that correct ?

Having lived fairly near Tollesbury for years I have never heard of it having a 'South' area......I just think it is a 'T' formed in the common way it was in those days (a bit like a 'J' with a top bar) which has degenerated with lazy handwriting.

William was a mariner Al...everywhere has a nth & sth!

I think we all agree that Tollesbury hasn't a south...just trying to make sense of a place that definitely starts with S  as the place immediately above which is Southwick

Yes, Pardon me, I see what you mean....trouble is the place at the bottom must have moved from Wiltshire to Essex.....Salisbury?

Is Southwick in Essex?

But if he's lodging with them in Shoreham - surely that says Sussex ?  So isn't this a census return from Sussex?
Wouldn't that be where Southwick is - don't know of one in Essex (although we do have a Wickford)

Actually I think the third Mariner looks like he could be Tolisbury (Tollesbury)  or Salisbury - maybe enumerator wasn't too hot on his counties !

Do you have his age on the 1871 to work out his birth year?  Maybe we could try other options?

Hi....
I am an Essex boy....
Looking for Mottesbury...never heard of it I am sorry to say....though there are plenty of other burys.....
However, you mention New Shoreham...(Shoreham)
This is in SUSSEX not Essex....are you looking in the right county...
Look at www.glaucus.org.uk...then history for New Shoreham...it places it on the English channel....
also shows a map of it.....

Hope this helps
