Airdrie (in Scotland) otherwise Airdree, Airdrey, Ardrey, Ardery (In Ireland)

My research for Airdrie has found many in Scotland (Wigtownshire) with some of it's immigrants coming from Ireland (indications are from Co Down). The problem is that is as far as I get.  I am unable to acquire very much in the way of solid leads in Ireland.

I believe all the names in the subject belong to the same family tree in some way or another, on the pretence that I have yet to find any Airdrie's IN Ireland but I have found many of the other subject names. There are/were a number of Airdrie's, likely relatives, living in Stoneykirk, Wigtownshire, Scotland which is where the list of people below ended up going to, during or just before the Potato Famine of the 1840's. The only thing I can figure is they changed their surname upon arriving in Scotland. If anyone can help me with any of these from the Ireland perspective, it would be greatly appreciated.

Curiously about the spelling, my name Gracey in Wigtownshire almost to a family have the irish background, the Scottish almost to afamily is Gracie.  I didnt find the Airdrie spelling in any of my usual Co Down sites. However to keep the pot boiling here are some results for Ardery

 I found only Margarets which is very very unusual

Thanks BallyaltikilliganG for your lookups.  I checked out the AncestryIreland website and it appears that the majority of their records are after my ancestors left Ireland. 

What I should have mentioned when I posted this was.....
Based on Thomas (b. 1847 or 48) and being born in Ireland, and the first year that Thomas and his grandparents (David and Mary) show on the census as being 1851, I'm venturing a guess that David and Mary arrived in Scotland between 1841 and 1851.  Oddly, Thomas' mother (Jemima) and Adam whom I believe was her brother, show on the 1841 census in Scotland.  Curiosity is; did Jemima go back to Ireland to give birth to Thomas or, more likely, was an assumption made about Thomas because his mother was Irish?

That said, I'm looking for any info prior to 1851 in Ireland for these folks.  The only hint I have for them in Ireland is that they mostly herold from Co Down.

Shanty, you are doing well to be so far back. I think its going to be church records from now on. Ancestryireland's sister website Tombstones of Ulster might record something.  I would try www.emeraldancestors.com, Its difficult to use but sometimes has unexpected goodies.

I found
Margaret AIRDRIE  born c1827  Down, Ireland  Parents Father:  Adam Airdrey 

So there was an Adam b abt 1800 and yet another spelling perhaps. 

That word Down can also mean the parish apart from the county so I would keep a lateral focus on Downpatrick itself.  Ros Davies has church records listed under her section churches and then parish. It will help if all one denomination.  Good luck

It may be stating the obvious, but a possible reason for the change in spelling once in Scotland is that there is the town of Airdrie there.   That will have been how an official (registrar or enumerator) naturally would have assumed it was spelt.

Also remember that spellings were not consistant in previous times and it's not at all uncommon to find a person's name spelt more than one way in the same document.
