John McGrath in Gloucester Gaol
« on: Sunday 18 November 07 21:24 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help me connect the McGraths of Gloucestershire with County Cork (or anywhere else)?

This is what I have so far:

22 June 1835 Alexander McGrath, widower, married Louisa Darke at St Nicholas, Gloucester

11 August 1835 John McGrath of County Cork, Ireland on the Gloucester gaol register for alledged theft in Cheltenham. Discharged 18 August.

27 July 1837 birth cert of Maria Dark McGrath daughter of Johna and Louisa at Stroud, Gloucestershire

1841 census  Louisa, Elizabeth (age 5) and Maria (age 3) Stroud. No sign of John or Alexander.

June 1842 (Free BMD) marriage Louisa McGroff and William Elston.

There is no sign of a John or Alexander Mcgrath in the registers of deaths for the Stroud area between July 1837 and June 1841.

I would love to know if the John McGrath in gaol in 1835 was the husband of Louisa and father of Maria and, therefore, the same as Alexander, and what happened to him after 1837.

Any help appreciated. Thanks

Trevor

My wife is related to Louisa Darke. She married Alexander McGrath, widower, in 1835 who was named as John on their daughter Hester Elizabeth's baptism in 1836 and Maria's in 1837. But after that he disappeared. He does not appear on the 1841 census and I cannot find his death.

Was he the John McGrath from County Cork on the 1835 Gloucester gaol register.

Any help appreciated

We still live in England, South West London

I have a baptism of Louisa DRAKE, daughter of Thomas and Dinah 1809. I assumed this was a mis-spelling and that John was her uncle. Do you have evidence he was her father. I note there is a will for John at Gloucester Record Office I am happy to send for if you don't have?

I have no doubt you are right. Louisa and John McGrath had two children - Hester and Maria.

I can send you a copy of Louisa's marriage entry if I can have your email.

I will obtain a copy of John Darke's will - might take a while.

How far back have you gone with John's family?

Thanks for putting me right
