*Completed*William and Caroline BURGESS
« on: Sunday 18 November 07 12:43 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please find this couple in the 1851 Census?  It looks as if they married in Hackney in the June Quarter of 1841 - I don't know if it was before or after the Census date that year.

By 1861 they were living in St John, Margate Kent:

William Burgess Head 50 Gentleman b Coggeshall Essex
Caroline Burgess Wife 40 b Middlesex
Sarah Ann Candy Niece 21 b Finsbury Msx

I would also like to discover Caroline's parents, but that may be a bit much of an ask!

Any help gratefully received.

Thank you

Philip Candy

Many thanks to all for all these very helpful facts.

I am sure that Caroline BURGESS was originally Caroline BOUCHER, and that she was a sister of Sarah Ann BOUCHER who married Richard CANDY in January 1837. Hence the two nieces - Sarah CANDY and Harriet CANDY - who stayed with her in various censuses.

I was hoping that in one of the early censuses her parents or other relatives may have been with her; in fact the 1851 Census is intriguing because there is a 57 year old woman named Sarah BOUCHER living with her, who could well be her mother.

If anyone has any inspirations, and in particular if anyone can identify when and where Caroline BOUCHER married William BURGESS, I would be very grateful of the additional help.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Could the mysterious place against Sarah BOUCHER's name be "Helions Bumpstead"

Apparently it's a place in Essex.

Kind regards

Philip

I'm afraid you will have to get the marriage cert to establish these facts.

It doesn't appear on the IGI,sadly.

Carol

On the London Marriages and Birth records:

William Burgess married Caroline Boucher

William is a "gentleman"  his father is William Burgess - cabinet maker
Caroline is a spinster and both are living at Cambridge Row. Her father is James Boucher and I think it reads "tallow chandler"

Witnesses - Thomas Barnes Jones and Wm Daniell

Marriage date is 21 Apr 1841 at Hackney St John.

I am researching a different William Burgess and came across your post. Better late than never eh!
