Need help with a location please
« on: Saturday 17 November 07 09:07 GMT (UK) »
Can someone tell me if Holywell Lane was considered to be part of Homerton or part of Shoreditch around 1824.

I have found a baptism which as the abode for the family as Holywell Lane (from the Shoreditch Parish Registers) but a google search for the address indicates that Holywell Lane is in between Homerton and Shoreditch.

Thanks
Jean

Hi Jean,

On my modern London Streetfinder Holywell Lane is between Shoreditch High Street and Great Eastern Street; I'd say part of Shoreditch as Homerton is somewhat to the north of the area.   What church did the baptism take place in?

The baptism took place at St Leonards Shoreditch.

What is concerning me is that the person this is about claims on the 51 census that she was born at Homerton.

Hi Jean,

I've often found a birthplace changing from census to census.

On my copy of an old Ordnance Survey map of the area (1872), Holywell Lane is shown as part of Holywell, Shoreditch.  St Leonard's Church is very close.   Perhaps they moved as a young child to Homerton and thought that they had always lived there.

Hmm I see the problem.

According to my Gazetteer, Holywell Lane did fall within the parish of St Leonard, Shoreditch High Street.
A local map here confirms this:
http://archivemaps.com/mapco/parish/parish10b.htm

Homerton is a bit further North-East - several parishes away in fact.

As Nanny Jane says, it might a case of your ancestor not being entirely clear about her own birth place.

If the baptism date, names and occupations fit I would be inclined to accept this as "just one of those things".

If not, I think you would need to check the records for St John-at-Hackney which was subdivided , spawning the parish of Homerton in 1846.

The records for St John-at-Hackney are, I believe, held at the London Metropolitan Archive.

Hi, Do you want to give a name and dates and perhaps we can pick her up on the 1841 /1861 or later census to check place of birth given.

Even siblings may give you a clue?

I have found Mary on the 1841 & 1851 Census, on the 51 census she gives her place of birth at homerton, from her age on the census and also her death certificate she was born approximately 1824. She married in 1853 and came to australia in 1854.

I have no details for siblings as on the census she was working as a servant for 41 and 51.

Being named Mary Emma Amelia Hutchinson you would think she would stand out but she was know to change the christian names around as per my grandmother's marriage certificate on which she has Amelia Mary Emma as her christian names (I have the original marriage certificate for my grandmother)

St Leonards Parish Registers at Shoreditch have a Mary Emma Amelia brn and chr 1824 althought the date of birth is February 1824 and the chr is April 1824 so if they had to travel for the chr  then this would suggest this could be her and I suspect this may be her but I need to be sure.

It's just one of those frustrating ones unfortunately and I live in regional NSW Australia so I don't have access to the records at the LMA which I think I need to check first.

regards
Jean

Hi Jean,

The Mary Emma Amelia Hutchinson shown on the IGI as b. 24 Feb 1824 and chr 18 Apr 1824 at St Leonards has parents William and Ann Hutchinson.  Does that match with your findings?  The gap between birth and christening is not too great considering the time of year and perhaps mum and or babe were not too strong.
