Hi All
        i am hoping someone can help me with a brick wall, well more like a mountain, im looking for my great grandmothers parents, she was Lillian Kraut, i have been serching now for a year or more, i just cant find anything of her or her parents, in the 1881 census which i only have access to,

What i do have and know she married my great grandfather, William henry  mainwaring, (Manwaring)
they married in 1905 at the register office in the district of cannock, in the the county of Stafford.

Lillian was aged 25yrs and william aged 34yrs and a widow, he was a coal miner, they were living at the time, princess Building mill or hill street cannock, i think William was lying about his age as i have his death cert and on it he was aged 70yrs, he died in 1936, which when taken away, gives a date of 1866, but if 34yrs are taken from 1905 you get 1871,

Lillian's father on the marriage cert is named as John Kraut (Deceased) occupation locomotive engine stoker, any help on either will be much appreciated,

William's father is missing on the cert so im guessing he was dead or he never knew is father or he was illigit,

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?

On the Kraut side, there was a Johann Hermann Kraut married in Whitechapel in 1868, perhaps to Ernestine Vogts (an Ernestine Kraut died 1903 in Fulham aged 64).  I'm having real trouble spotting them in ANY censuses, though.

                 The witnesses on the cert were  a William hopley, and a Martha Wood, at Cannock register office, the fathers name was john kraut, locomotive Engine stoker, thought with a job like that he would be easy to pin down but it seems not?

I did have a look for you late last night, but drew a complete blank.

A general search - BMD registrations and all Census indexes - suggests that 'Kraut' is a very uncommon name in the UK. If memory serves, there was only one family (in Derbyshire) where the head of the family - one Adam Kraut, a pork butcher, hailed from Wuttenberg, Germany. No obvious connection to your family. The same general search yielded a lot more results in the USA, but I don't have access to those.

I think you may have to cast your net a little wider - and possibly wait for the 1911 Census!

              Thanks for looking and your time it's appreciated, it's become a pain after a year of searching, i found this site and have had some good results, but i suppose its the luck of the draw, got several cert,s of my grandfather and his siblings, bu of cause born after 1901,

Well, I suppose if you know for certain where your grandfather was living in 1911 - a precise address - you could always fork out £45 for an image of the census page now.

Not sure that's true. The 1911 Census was just as detailed as it's predecessors - if not more.

Interestingly, there is a Martha Hoppley m. possibly John Wood in Cannock in 1893, she may be the Martha Wood aged 28 in Cannock on the 1901 census index. You need to get hold of the full census details from 1901 somehow - it looks to me like there may be two MANWARING children, Willie and Emily, living with the Wood family.
