Thomas Hind - one of thousands of them!
« on: Friday 16 November 07 16:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am trying to find a marriage of my GGrandfather Thomas Hind. He was born in Carlisle in 1829 and died in Carlisle in 1867. In the 1861 Census he had a wife, Sarah with four children, Margaret, (Sarah) Jane, Thomas (another!) and Martha. They were born between 1853 and 1859. These four children turn up in the 1871 Census living with Jane, a widow. I cannot find a marriage certificate for either Sarah or Jane and don't know their maiden names. Does anyone recognise these people or can help me?
Thank you,
Pauline.

Is the Jane the children are living with also a Hind?  If she's not a 2nd wife, perhaps she's a sister in law.

The names are ringing strong bells with me.  Is Thomas Hind junior (b 1859) the Thomas Hind, butcher of Caldewgate, who was Margaret Forster's grandfather (?) and was written about by her in her family memoir Hidden Lives?

I was just wondering Pauline, if Jane is Sarah Jane ....... She called her daughter Sarah Jane so maybe she decided to go by 'Jane' instead of 'Sarah' to avoid confusion.  Jane looks like the same person ..... butcher same as Thomas ..... same age as Sarah ,,,,,, and born in Carlisle.

All this doesn't really help because I can't find a marriage for any of them.

I've been looking through marriages in Carlisle of just 'Sarah' in 1853 ... a year before Margaret was born.... but some of the husbands are mis-transcribed.

Oh... just noticed the new post by avm228 ...... that sounds interesting

The childrens baptisms are all in the IGI, children of Thomas and Jane.
Don't cry because its over. Smile because it happened.

Thank you, Lizzie not so Busy.  Jane is named in the 1871 Census as Hind, widow, and as the mother of the children but I do not know if she is any other sort of relative to Thomas.

Thank you, AVM228. The strong bells are correct.

Thank you, Darlingtonian.  This is a possibility but were they married?!?!
Thanks, also, for looking through the records.

Thank you, GeoffE.

But I still need a marriage date. Pauline
