Royal Soldiers' Daughters' Home, Hampstead - offer & request
« on: Friday 16 November 07 16:17 GMT (UK) »
I have an appointment arranged to visit the school and look at the archives, which are not available anywhere else. I'd really like to go armed with a list of inmates for the 1861/71/91 and 1901 censuses, if anyone is willing to help.

Also, if you have anyone who was admitted to the home/school, I'm willing to try to find details of the circumstance of their admission/leaving etc, if I can.

Thanks,
Linda

Ohhhh how I wish I had seen this post earlier.

I too have a ancestor at the school in 1881 and because I know little about her father I have been trying forever to find out where those records are kept and if they are accessible.

Please Linda, If you went and it was a successful trip, could you tell me how you went about it. Who to contact?  What sort of information was available for each girl etc.

Anything you can tell me about your trip there last year would be of great help.

Thanks  ;D

Dear Genecat,
i am currently researching my great grandmother who was here in 1881. I know her family were in the 66th berkshire regiment but have come up against a brick wall.Have you had any luck with researching here. I would love to know .

Hi Lizajane

No, no luck with this line of research. Ridban had planned to visit but best laid plans and all that.. didn't get there.

From what I've been told the school are not helpful. Real shame. I would of loved to had my ancestors record from there. Would of been real breakthrough for me.

Good luck finding more and let me know if you do.

Genecat.

In my search for to be able to access information about the school, I came across your request. I have recently written to the National Archives and asked for information to be released under the Freedom of Information Act.  The ONLY way information can be accessed is by visiting the National archives at Kew yourself.

My sister will be going soon as we (3 sisters) all  want photographs that were taken during our stay there 1941-1944. There were several  photo's of the whole school. Even Maypole dancing.

The information you need if you can go there is :-

ED 21/57007.  School No.   28, 248

I hope this will be of help to you. Please pass it on if you come across anyone else who needs it.  April     07/02/2011

Forgot to say, we were then at Moor Park Sandy Lodge . where the school was evacuated during the war years from Hampstead.

Hi emaline

Really appreciate you sharing this information. It is good to know that it is available at least. I personally can't make it to Kew... but good to know it is there.

Do you know what time period that covers?  My ancestor was there very early on around 1881.

GeneCat :)

I did not know the name you wanted. BUT, what I did do was to go to the free 1881 census.

Just type in ONLY,  Rosslyn  Hill.  Nothing else.  It will come up with 4 places on Rosslyn Hill.  The last two pages are for the school.

Otherwise I cannot find anything on the Nat. Archives for 1881.

Hope this helps

Getting late and I'm getting scatty.  Meant to say the ED I gave you only covers the time period from 1941-1944.

My sisters and I were at the school from 1941 onwards.
