Hi,

Just a thought:

What makes you think that Highmore may have married Mary Wheeler (in 1751) prior to marrying Elizabeth Whiteheart? If it was true then it would resolve quite a few of my uncertainties! I do know he was a widower when he married Sophia Willoughby after Elizabeth's death but I have no real details onnthe marriage to Mary Wheeler.

Any help appreciated!

Regards,
Mike

It was a suggestion - simply because Highmore Skeats is a very unusual name and there cannot have been too many of them about.  No proof at all since I have only been looking at basic transcription records.  A burial record for a Mary Skeats would obviously help as well as a marriage record to Elizabeth Whiteheart which indicates that he is a widower.

I have found a marriage licence bond record for Highmore Skeats & Mary Wheeler's marriage:
Highmore was at least 23, a cabinetmaker of St Thomas, Salisbury, bachelor.  Mary was a spinster aged 21 of St. Martin, Salisbury and the marriage took place in Bemerton.  The bondsman was John Skeat of St Thomas

There is a submitted entry for a baptism of Highmore Skeats in 1741, but he would be too young to be the one who married Mary Wheeler, but may have been the one who married Elizabeth Whiteheart.  However, who might have been his parents if he was born in 1741?

If any one could find a burial record for Mary Skeats (nee Wheeler) I would be very appreciative. Equally so with any entry for the marriage in 1776 of Highmore Skeats and Elizabeth Whiteheart which showed Highmore to be a widower.

I believe that the bondsman John Skeat was Hoghmore's father.

I am coming to the conclusion that the 1841 baptism date is an error! From here I only have access to the IGI through www.familysearch.org. Searching for Highmore Skeats throws up a few entries. Two of these are for his marriage to Elizabeth Whiteheart and show his birth as about 1741. Another two entries also show the same marriage but without any suggestions as to his birthdate.

It seems clear that he married Elizabeth Whiteheart and Sophia Willoughby as all three of them are buried at Rockbourne and his age at death suggest a birth in 1729. He was baptised in 1728.

Regards,
Mike

Good Day, Nell,
Another look-up request I'm afraid, this time for Salisbury St. Martin/St. Edmunds.
My ggg.Grandfather William Randall appears in the 1841 and 1851 census, but with two birthdates, c.1807 and c.1811. He was born in Milford. I have all the available data for the Salisbury area except these two parishes.
All (?) I want to know is the name of his parents.
The nearest assumption I can make is Elizabeth Cooe, b. 1783, Milford and George Randall b. Wilton, (I think). They were married in 1802 which could fit quite well. But again all supposition.
As I have been stuck for about 5 years with no progress on this I would be very grateful for any help.
Presumably my only other course of action is a visit to the Wiltshire record office, made more difficult as I live in Spain.
Incidentally, what does 'fundholder' and 'annuitant' mean? a pension?
Many Thanks
Tony Randall

Hi Tony,

You are looking for William's baptism and he was born in Milford in Wiltshire?  (I ask because there are others  ;) )    He's not in the St Edmund's records that I can see and I don't have the St Martin baptism records.  :(

Ages in 1841 were supposed to be rounded down to the nearest five years and this might account for the discrepancy in the possible birth dates.

Hi Freya,

Welcome to RootsChat.

I have access to baptisms up to 1812 or so and marriages to the late 1700s.  Are you looking for anyone in particular?  I've found 8 Skeat(e)s baptisms so far.  Not looked at the marriages.

Nell

Hi there,
I am aware your post is quite old, but if you are still around would you be willing to look and see if there is a record of SAMUEL MORRIS being baptised in St Edmunds around 1749

many thanks

Haydn

Hi Haydn

I can only see a child of Samuel Morris being baptised in 1749 - Nancy on 28 September 1749, mother was Anne.

How certain are you that it was St Edmund's?

Hi Nell,

Many thanks for a very quick reply.
The St Edmunds information came from details on his second marriage certificate (in Newfoundland Canada)
of course it could be that he only lived there for a period of time,so I can not be 100% certain.

Via the OPC for Wiltshire I was able to see marriages but baptisms are not yet available hence my mail to you.
I had hoped for success as there appears to be very few MORRIS'S in that location. I did see that the Samuel you
refer to came from Ilmininster.
I'll continue with my hunt................. It would be "normal" to name a boy child after his dad (as we know), but I would have
expected if he had been born by Sept. 1749 the family would have baptised their children together.
I would be grateful if you can keep the name "in your mind" should it appear on any later data.

Many thanks........

regards
Haydn
