Sutton Coldfield - Staffs??
« on: Thursday 30 December 04 13:54 GMT (UK) »
According to the 1881 census my gt. gt. grandfather was born in 'Sutton, Staffs' - is this right? I always associate Sutton with Warks. Either way I can't find any BMD info on West Mids or Warks for Sutton - any idea if it's online?

Thanks

Paul,

What is your gggrandfathers name? we may be able to come up
with some census info for you, or even some birth details, if you give as much info as poss.

Re your question Sutton Coldfield, boundaries have changed
so much over the years, that I think it could have been in Staffs
at that time, Log on to Genuki......they have a very good site,
and it will more than likely give you the answer you need.

(but I bet there is some one on the site...as we speak, who has the right answer already!!)

Kind regards
JeannieR

Thanks JeannieR, his details are as follows...

Thomas Martin, born 1838 (deduced from age at 1881 census) at Sutton, Staffordshire.

I would imagine this is Sutton Coldfield (is there another Sutton in Staffs?) as his children are shown as born in Birmingham, Warks on the 1881 census.

Thanks again!

There is a Sutton in Staffs, about 12 miles west of Stafford but I don't know if that is the one you want. Best bet would be to ask for a lookup in 1871 and see what he has there for his birth place.

Hi it's Me....again

Have found the family in 1871.....here goes.

THOMAS MARTIN head 33 born Warwickshire carpenter
EMMA                  wife  29
Thomas W           son   6
Emily                   dau   4
Walter                son    3
Alfred                 son    1
Sarah                 dau    5 mths
Address 5 Ravenhurst Street , Aston, B'Ham
RG10/3137
folio 118
page 20
schedule 116

It seems the 1881 could have mis- transcribed some details. If Thomas said Sutton, as in Coldfield, the enumerator
may have thought he meant Sutton, near Stoke on Trent????

Hope this helps. will look for his birth/marriage.

Hackstaple: Yes, I have a copy of that from the 1881 census. What troubles me is that I have a photograph of Emma where she appears to be in her 60's or 70's. Perhaps she was elsewhere at the time of the census....?

Thanks for the input!

Paul

Edited: I note that daughter Emily is not on the 1881 census - she should have been age 14 by then, perhaps she died between 1871-1881.  I know that Alfred Martin died within 10 years or so - I have a photo of him as a young man and someone has written "found drowned" on the back; maybe I can find a reference to that elsewhere...
