Chris...on Alfred's burial it has to be right, near impossible for it not to be. Following the rules that says you must see the documentation yourself I can't be absolutely conclusive, but for the time being it is good enough for me. And if you read my next post to Karen, we now have more information!

Karen......no longer a contender, were right on the money! And here's why. According to the later census, Alfred lists his birthplace as St Leonards on the Sea. Your family lists their birthplace (for the children) as St Mary Magdalene. I don't know the difference, but they most be very close. In the 1871 census I find the same family, with no Elfred/Alfred, which is correct since he appears on his own as a student at Battle Grammar School. And the 1871 census has the children stating their birthplace as St Leonards on the Sea. I had already ordered his birth certificate, so I must wait until it arrives to confirm it, but hard to believe this is wrong information. Also, I noted you said that Charles had remarried...I assume since the 1871 census states "wife Maria age 24"; is there perhaps an error rather than being remarried.....numbers transposed, Mary becoming Maria? Anyhow, I am very very grateful for this clue, and wish I could thank you more! BTW, do you know Charles' father?

OK on St Mary Magdalen and St Leonards, that whole thing is tying up together real nice.

Also, Mary Burgess wrote me directly with some more Chapman/Foord information.....she has some early stuff documented and we are going to go through that stuff too.

Noticed the link this morning when I was reading the "servant" stuff; thanks  Funny thing, I ran into the word servant so many times when pouring over census records. Now it all comes together.

Whilst browsing my earlier databases on some old CD's I came across the following in All Saints Church, Hastings: The Transcription came from a publication done in 1890 by Alfred Ridley Bax FSA

Now, the way I read this, it is probably the first child of James and Clara.  - If they married in September 1850 at Wainfleet, Lincs, then it is just over a year before Charles James was born - In those days, most women went home to mum to have their first child.  He survived up to the age of 18 months; but he would not appear on any census so we would not have any record for him. Getting a birth of death certificate would confirm.

What are your thoughts on this

Just sent you an email on the corrections........and I do appreciate your looking out for me...
This is quite interesting, and I suspect you are right on the money. I will have to dig deep in my notes, but am quite sure there are no other James and Claras, thus it would have to be them. You sure are the dedicated detective. I am a bit bogged down here, got home late yesterday and still have quite bit of work to do, but will review and confirm a bit later. I also need to do some gedcom work to get that off to you.

Hi Chris....got up early this morning, first thing I saw was your email! Four generations, I simply can't believe my luck! I will email you back later this afternoon on that, and the other corrections. I am so so excited. First though I must get caught up on the forum, reply to a few PMs, then I am off for a few hours but will be back later this afternoon.

I have gone through my stuff and can find nothing even remotely close to another James and Clara, so given the additional evidence such as Hastings/Wainfleet connection it has to be right.

Again Chris comes through with wonderful new information, you would put Sherlock Holmes to shame!

Hi Chris,

I have just been looking through the messages between yourself and Larry back in November.  My gt. grandparent's were Edward Chapman & Phoebe Foord. 

I have researched the Foord family and have a James Burt Foord, jeweller,  born 1859 at Hastings, the son of James Burt Foord and Clara Pickersgill.  Clara was born abt. 1829 at Mainfleet, Lincoln, and her husband James Burt Foord was born 13 April 1829, at Ninfield.  He was the the illigit son of Mary Foord, born 27 Jan 1811 at Ninfield.  Mary in turn was the daughter of Thomas Foord and Jane Vann and born at Ninfield on 27 Jan 1811.  She was the sister of my gt. grandmother, Phoebe Foord, also of Ruth - the Chapman dairy branch, and Barbara Foord wife of James Chapman.
