Boarding house @ Blackpool
« on: Wednesday 14 November 07 13:03 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone give me some info about a Boarding House at Warbreck Drive, Blackpool, UK.  Owned by John & Florence Bourne around the 1950's ?
Any photos or info would be great - have tried "googling" but there is more boarding houses in Blackpool than I realised .  :-[
Just a long shot !
thanks

Here is a lovely website for the Fylde area that I've just discovered myself, it might be useful to you:

http://www.poulton-le-fylde-hcs.co.uk/body_index.html

I'm not an expert on Blackpool at all but as Warbreck Drive is at the north end, it might be worth googling 'Bispham' rather than Blackpool, to narrow things down a bit.

Good luck!

Warbreck Drive is a very long road which runs from the North end of Blackpool through to Bispham, and is very close to the promenade. There are indeed thousands of boarding houses in Blackpool of varying sizes. However Warbreck Drive is now predominantly residential.
Do you have the number of the house ? If so I could maybe go along and take a couple of snapshots for you.

Just having a look in the 1952 telephone directory on Ancestry.  This looks like them

J A Bourne
Board Rsdnce
91 Warbreck Drive

North Shore 52196

There is also a Bourne Pte Htl
Wimbourne Pl
New Sth Prom
South Shore 42930
(Visitors)
Wimbourne Pl
New South Promenade
South Shore 415171

But I suspect that is not connected

I haven't checked any other years but it should be possible to get an idea what period they were there.

Nice one Martin, that gives me another idea. I could have a look in Blackpool library at the electoral registers to see how long they lived there. Can't get there till next week though.
That is, if Natalie would like me to.

Hi

Due to Martin's usual great detective work - 91 Warbreck Drive can be found on a map here

http://www.rootschat.com/links/0282/

to put it into perspective for you.  It is still there - well it was this morning!

It's in the right place to being in the boarding house area back in the '50's but many now have reverted to residential houses along Warbreck Drive, as Joanne rightly points out.  Now guest houses or private hotels are found mainly running off the Promenade in the "Avenues"

The local church was/is St Stephen on the Cliffs.  I'll have a "fly-by" tomorrow and check it out for you.
