Ever wondered?
« on: Wednesday 14 November 07 12:42 GMT (UK) »
   Hi ,
Been in deep thought  ??? about this now for sometime , maybe i'm a bit sad :( but has anyone else ever wondered if they look like any of their ancesters and have their personalities  ??? i saw a program once on some sort of DNA where they can tell what part of the country they originate from which i supose would then allow the person to know which side of the family they take after (if you see what i mean ) i'd love to know this i think it would make me feel who i " belonged to " mum's side of the family or dad's , i did know both set's of grandparents but cannot see any resemblement to any of them (although i suppose you don't see it yourself ) but i would love to have seen their parents and sibling's ..........has anyone else ever wondered this or is it just me been SAD ???

                            gah

no its not sad at all i look at the few old photos i have had think who has whose eyes, hair  etc. a lot of my Cornsih guys ahd red hair and my uncle and cousin have now they obvs got it from there.
My grandfather was ukrainian and therefore we all have very pale skin particualy my elder daughter who looks like a milk bottle even in the middle of summer

not to the extent of my partners dad though everytime we see him we have to look like someone or have the same characteristics as someone - then it gets annoying

just becuase my youngest daghter is lefthanded (so is my dad) doesnt mean she got it from her great uncle so and so.

my daughter is disabled the condiditon she has is genetic yet i have not found anyone else with the same conditon in the family.

she has Spinal Muscle Atrophy type 3 (luckily she has type 3 becuase type 1 & 2 are life limiting)

has anyone heard of this condition?

i have never met anyone who has yet 1 in 40 people carry the faulty SMN1 gene and it is the biggest killer inthe UK of children under 1 years of age .

i think there should be a government awareness campaign to make people more aware of it and to get the test introduced at pregnancy that teels you if your child has SMA or not (there is a test similar process to the downs syndrome one but it is only offered to people that already have a SMA child)

rant over i shall now step down of my soap box

 :D

Yes, I've heard of it Toni, apparently my great uncle suffered from it but I don't know which type. He was 68 when he died but it was just after I was born so I never knew him. My brother is a lot older than me though and can remember him, he told me what the condition was called. I don't know of anyone before or since who has suffered with this, perhaps I'll find out in my research. It's terrible that the condition has so little recognition in terms of testing for it as a genetic illness.

And to go back to the original question, yes I have wondered if I am like any of my ancestors. My grandparents' wedding photo has all the wedding guests on it  so I've had a good look at them all! They are on my Dad's side though, and I think I probably take more after my Mother's side.

is that good you take after your mothers side or is that wishfult hinking because of the photo you have of your fathers side!

i'm glad someone else has heard of SMA but sadly those are usually the people that have a family member or friend  with the condition.

I to look at old photos gah and wonder what they looked like. and if there was any resemblance,  or traits that have been passed down,  so you're not alone in your thoughts,

But sometimes I get sad :'( when I look at the death certificates of so long ago and I feel (silly as it sounds)  as though I am intruding in their grief, as they were real flesh and blood, and my ancestors.........................
Strange the things we think of, but all we can do is wonder

Not sure whether it's good or not but my parents were both lovely people so I don't really mind. I must admit that I like the look of my Dad's paternal grandmother - not because I think she's especially nice looking, just that she looks like a spunky lady!

I've been told I look like my father's father, and my mother.

Just thinking again about your post Toni, my gt uncle had only one child as far as I can see, who died age six. His own parents had eleven other children, at least five of them died in childhood. I know the infant mortality rate was high in those days anyway but it makes me wonder whether any of them had SMA.

And to go back to the original post:

i saw a program once on some sort of DNA where they can tell what part of the country they originate from which i supose would then allow the person to know which side of the family they take after

I saw the programme gah, it was called The Face of Britain (if we are referring to the same one). I found it absolutely fascinating, they could trace back whether you were descended from the Vikings, Normans etc. They also showed people who had 'typical' faces of the area. All clever stuff!
