1891 Census Look up Please
« on: Tuesday 13 November 07 16:06 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for John William Shepherd Christened in June 1884 in Attercliffe. His parents were John William Shepphard and Eliza.

I think he married in Sheffield in September 1906 to either Lily Hibbert or Martha Helena Thompson.

Can anyone help me please to find him and his parents.

Regards,

Margaret :)

Hi Margaret,

I am trying to trace a John William Shepherd...on a slim chance...

My mothers grand dad (John William Shepherd b 1880-1890?) had 3 sons, my mothers dad - Fredrick Shepherd b 1916 East Ham, William CW Shepherd b 1918 and John VW Shepherd b 1923.

I know JW Shepherds was a sergeant in the army (east yorks reg). His father was also a John William Shepherd and was a coal porter in 1913.

The names and the coal mining link fit. Do you think this is the same JW Shepherd?

Ta for your help

Jon

There are two John W Shepherds in the WW1 medal rolls who served in the East Yorkshire Regiment. Of one with number 28285 I cannot find any more details.

A small group of pension documents for the other suggests he is a good bet for the John William aged 7 in 1891 above, though there are no family details or addresses to confirm this.

Some details from the pension records:

John William Shepherd
(images start at page 36349 at Ancestry)
Pte East Yorks Regt (8th Battalion)
service number 13140
born 1884
enlisted 21 Sep 1914
initial medical examination at Attercliffe
discharged 21 Mar 1919
suffering from Neuresthenia from July 1918
medical Board assessment 17 Jul 1919
40% disablement, attributable to war service
(Description of symptoms)
brief updates in Aug and Dec 1921
(no family details)

...but I see that in 1901 there are two John Williams with almost identical ages in Attercliffe/Darnall, so the service record could be the 'other' one. Neither is a carpenter.

Thanks Hugh,

You found information that took me ages to find :) For a long time I thought that record, you have also unearthed was the JW Shepherd I was looking for and it gave me more leads with respect to his place of residence, maybe birth and his age.

However, on the marr cert he is listed as sergeant East Yorks reg, Fulford barracks. This is also this is confirmed on the cert for birth of his 1st son (Fredrick) in 1916. He is listed as a army gym instructor also. He survived the war and was a home guard and rifle range warden (so my mum tells me in WW2).

Incidentally, paid some money for someone to search the army records but it did not turn up anything concrete.

I am hoping that of his 3 boys some of their offspring will know the family history. The problem with searching census is I have a rough age (b 1890) and I know his fathers name...but I lack any support info like place or other family members...consequentially there are several possible (maybe as many as 8-10) candidates.

Thanks again
Jon

Thanks for your efforts though.

Jon
