Hi Sandra

Unable to locate yor George in 1871.  But noted that his mother-in-law (Mary Atwater transcribed as Otwater but I believe it's more likely to be the former) was living with the family in 1881.

This marriage maybe the one you need to locate a reference to George's parents.

Marriage
December quarter 1872
Sheffield
South Yorkshire west Riding of Yorkshire
Volume: 9c
Page: 769
Atwater, Charlotte
Coulson, George

Cheers

I notice that George was claiming to be 52 in 1891 and 63 in 1901 (let me know if you don't have these). Wonder if you have discounted the IGI entry for a baptism of George Coulson at Stamford St Michael 15/05/1838 to George and Mary?

your George and Charlotte Coulson are in my family tree. They are my 3xgreat grandparents.
George was born 25/04/1838, St Michael, Stamford. His parents were George Coulson and  Mary Sewell/Sawell. His mother was the informant and the address given was North Street.
Hope this is of some help.

Greetings fellow Coulson researcher,

It would seem that we may be related, as I have your George Coulson in my family tree, as he was married to my gr. gr. grandmother, Charlotte Atwater!

As far as I know, George was not, however, an ancestor of mine as Charlotte Atwater gave birth to an illegitimate child (also Charlotte Atwater and being my gr. grandmother) about 6 years before she married George Coulson, and although her daughter claimed in later life that her name was Charlotte Coulson, I believe she just took on the name, no doubt to cover up her illegitimacy.  She certainly married my gr. grandfather Charles Evans in the name
of Charlotte Coulson.

Like you, I have never been able to find any clues as to the parentage of George Coulson, and have only the later census pages to go by, which state he was born in Stamford.  Until recently I had an Aunt who, when she was alive, always
maintained that George Coulson came from Oakham in Rutland, which is not too far from Stamford.  Could there be a clue in this?

One of my puzzlements about the marriage of George Coulson
to Charlotte Atwater, is why it should have occured in Sheffield in Yorkshire.  I can understand George being there, as at the time of their marriage, according to his marriage certificate he was a policeman, and was no doubt transferred around the country, but how Charlotte happened to be up there when she had always lived in Surrey and Kent, I know not.

I am more than happy to share my on-line family tree with you if you would like to have a look at it.  Just let me know and I will happily send you the website address and password.

I am very interested to know how you are related to George
Coulson, so will await a reply from you with baited breath.

Happy hunting, Diana in Tropical Far North Queensland, Australia

Goodness, I was so excited about seeing the name of someone in my family tree, I didn't think to keep on reading the rest of the letters on this subject, but now I have
discovered the letter from Lucy, who is, without doubt, related to me as I recognise many of her names of interest....in particular, Coulson, Atwater, Evans and Luce.  Please contact
me a.s.a.p. Lucy, as I would love to hear from you.

My grandmother was Mary Charlotte Evans, and I have been able to trace her ancestors back quite a way, so please lets share information on our mutual family.

Hi Coulson researchers.

I have been trying to trace my Coulson ancestory and have just stumbled across this old topic.  I am hoping you are able to help.

I have traced back to the family of Thomas Coulson through Parish listings, who died in 1843 at the age of 52.  This was confirmed in the 1841 Census where he was aged 50.  Assuming the dates are accurate, it would mean he was born 1790/1. He was married to Elizabeth Close in 1816 in St Michael, Stamford Lincolnshire.  Given that his children were all born in Stamford, I was wondering if Thomas may have been related to George Senior, maybe a brother?

I would love to make contact with anyone else who has some information regarding the Coulsons in Stamford, as I have not been able to identify the birth of Thomas or any related information.

Thanks

Peter

Hi Peter,
I am not related to the Coulsons but have had a look around for you.
You may already have all of this but the naming pattern may be a clue to Thomas's Parentage.

Christenings St John, Stamford or All Saints, Stamford to THOMAS/ELIZABETH;
ABSALOM 16 May 1817
THOMAS 20 December 1818
WILLIAM 22 April 1821
MARIA 29 February 1824
ALFRED 29 December 1825
JONATHAN 23 December 1827
HENRY 20 December 1829
JAMES 25 January 1832
EDWARD 10 June 1835
(Source Familysearch.Org)
(Jonathan/Henry/James/Edwards are on FreeREG also, Fathers Occp Mason)

You may already have the Witnesses to the Marriage of Thomas/Elizabeth;
Mark PORTER/Basil FERRAR

Trish :)

I see they are under Carlson in 1841 Census and Nathan age 16 is Jonathan from Christenings.
