Confused with census
« on: Monday 12 November 07 01:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,
??? I'm confused, can somone explain to me how a family can be in the same place at the same time, even though the towns are fairly close to each other?
I was checking the 1851 Census for England and Wales for my MENERE family which has 3 districts shown - Brislington, Kynesham and Bitton, I was wondering if my family waited till the census was done at Brislington  then ran down the road to Kynsham and got counted again, then ran down the road again to Bitton and got counted for the third time? There is, I'm sure, a simple answer to this?
Also can someone let me know where Kingston, Esher is??? as there is a Mary MENERE age 29 listed also. Do any chatters out there know of any MENERE familys related or not?? I have not heard a peep out of anyone yet, I'm still having a hard time finding anything pre 1800!
Many thanks,
Ozzyal

Hi Ozzyal
On the 1851 census William J MENERE and wife Matilda and family are living in the Civil Parish of Brislington Somerset. Kynesham is the Registration District and Bitton is the Sub Registration District.
They are not recorded in three different towns.
Mary MENERE age 29 is living the civil parish Hampton Wick in Middlesex.  The Registration District is Kington the Sub Registration District is Esher.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Leonie

Kingston and Esher are in the county of Surrey
I thought so also (used to visit a great-aunt in Esher back in the 70s) but perhaps there was a boundary change at a time?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

According to GENUKI:

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/kingston.html

the registration district of Kingston, though mostly in Surrey, included a few bits of Middlesex including Hampton Wick

My g.grandfather was born in Middlesex in the 1850s and it seemed to cover a very large portion of London.  See

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/mdx.htm

for a list of all the districts covered.
