Thank you for getting back to me and for the information I now have another country, USA to explore and other sources. I hope you don't mind me asking but do you think that there is a connection between William Indian and Thomas Indian/Susanna Havelock, or am I just grasping at straws in my haste to delve further back. I am struggling a little with this sight because of my own lack of knowledge(or Savvy) on the best way to negotiate my way around but I will get there eventually. I have found the folks on this sight extremely helpful and patient with an old thicky like me.

Yes, I do indeed believe there's a connection. Now, please keep in mind that I began documenting this line with the most current generation, which for me means staring in the United States and then working back into England. Not everything has been proven, but I have made connections that I believe I will be able to prove, mostly as finances allow. My Descendants Of John Indian outline may be of help to you. I'm going to figure out how to post it and will be right back with it.

I can take this 10 generations but that would include many who are / may be living.

There are those who believe Susannah INDIAN was born 1789 and died 1831, a daughter of John Indian
and Margaret Makepeace. I’m not convinced and have not yet researched this fully, but there is a burial
for a Susannah Indian in 1831 that I believe to be the wife of Thomas son of John.

I'd be delighted to hear what you have, if you don't mind sharing. This family intrigues me, in part because the name Indian was unusual enough that I do believe all in Counties Durham and Cumberland were related, even if distantly. My direct line is John, his son Thomas, Thomas' son William, William's son John. I have found that the Indians in Lackawanna County are all related, and some scattered, setting in Delaware County, Pennsylvania; Covington Township, Lackawanna, Pennsylvania; New Jersey; New York.

Thank you yet again for your most generous response to my simple question.
I feel that I am a complete fraud but let me try to explain.
I am a complete amatuer at the Family History game even though I have been trying to resolve my own families history for more years than I care to remember. A friend, whose wife in the long run must be some kind of a relative to you (extremely distant) asked if I could have a go at his wife's Family Tree. Not getting very far with my own I agreed, after telling him that I did not promise any success. After some initial digging around on the internet I came across a marriage that at first made me howl with laughter(no offence meant). It was for GEORGE PATTINSON c1835 Alston-Cumberland and one ANN INDIAN c1840 Alston-Cumberland. I must have a weird sense of humour but the fact that George married Ann Indian tickled me somewhat. After that I was hooked and just had to see how far this surname would take me.
I proceded to check the census' 1841 - 1900 for England and was amazed at the amount of information there was regarding the various branches of this family. I did not know that the family had emmigrated but thanks to you I now find that the family INDIAN has gone back to AMERICA. It is like someone saying "Taking coals to Newcastle". In case you haven't heard of this saying it comes from near to where I live in the North East of England and the last thing you would consider doing is taking coals to Newcastle because it was at one time one of the main ports for coal transport to the world.
I am sorry if this is long winded and not of Family History value but I feel that I must explain to you how I come to be chasing INDIANS. I am very serious about research and will do my utmost to verify all my information but at this moment in time I am just trying to assemble some details so that when I do go to the local Records Office at Durham I will have some names, dates and places to point me in the right direction.
The lady who might be one of your distant cousins has ANN INDIAN as her GG Grandmother, not that she knows this yet. So Laurie you are way ahead of me in the research game concerning this family but I am confident when I do draw the information together and surprise her, I will leave her in no doubt that it is not all my work but yours and other kind folk. I f you feel that can forgive me and help in any other way I will be truely thankful.

Just to put everyone up to date, there are no Indians or Trathers in local phone book so they all either emigrated, died out or went ex directory. However there is  a Slowther listed.
Asking locally there seem to be no indians or trathers in the area.
