Bollington
« on: Sunday 11 November 07 03:19 GMT (UK) »
:D Hi there,
Is there anyone out there reading this that lives in Bollington ?
the reason I ask is that I want to get a photo of a farm there but as I live in New Zealand it is a little bit hard for me to do.
The farm belonged to my grt, grt, grt grandfather James Harrop and was called Beestow farm...it is up on Beeston Brow...The farm is now called Green Lane Farm but it is the same place as I have checked it out on the old tithe maps
http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/
what I would really like is a photo of the old cottage and farm building which still look to be there, so if anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it...also does anyone know why James owned most of the roads in Bollington ( 7 acres of them)...thanks

Hello...

Completely unrelated to my Harrops - I also have Bollington connections 1840s - 1880s (who ended up marrying the descendents of the Harrops in Manchester in 1904)

Have you seen the Bollington History Website? .... It's got some great information and pictures.  Here is one of Beeston Brow.

http://www.happy-valley.org.uk/streets/beestonbr.htm

They also have some really interesting books on the history of Bollington with pictures of old Bollington and references to lots of names. I've just had a look at the ones I have and can't see any specific mentions of Harrops or Beestow farm (or is it Beeston Farm if it is on Beeston Brow?)

The discovery centre are really helpful if you e-mail them.  They have lots of photos which are not on the website so might be able to have a look for you to see if they have any old photos of the farm.

The two best books for photos I have are ...
Looking Back at Bollington 1894-1914

I have just seen a photo you posted of the Hamers glass shop Hyde road Manchester. You may not still be using this sight but I will give it a go. My great grand mother and grandmother also lived /worked in that shop. My grand mother then moved to New Zealand. If you get this please do respond, I will write some more if I hear from you....Ant

Dear Harewoodhouse,
Thanks for replying, I am trying to get my head around how this site works with the messaging, so apologies if you have received multiple messages, did you get this one....?

hi harewoodhouse, Do you know of a Great aunty Ninna who lived in australia? or an Aunty Polly with no legs? I'm just starting out on this exploring of family members and already a photo of the Hamers glass/plumbing shop is amazing...Ant

The reason I'm exploring the family is because my mum is now in a home with dementia and the things she is saying are all mixed up. Our family was never spoken about as I was growing up so I'm quite intrigued, but only have little snippets, it would be good to know a bit more.

I remember the glass shop vaguely, being taken with my Gran, Emma, who was a Hamer and lived there. Her brother was Sid Hamer. Would this be your family as well? I know people shared houses a lot in those days so it may not be. My mum did not live there as Emma had married and moved up to Reddish Lane, Gorton by then.
I'd love to hear from you more....Ant
