Oh! That would also fit what I just found:
IGI batch C131001
REBECCA MAYHEW
Christening:  24 JUN 1848   Sidcup, Kent, England
  Father:  THOMAS MAYHEW
  Mother:  MARY ANNE

I wasn't successful in finding the other family. I wouldn't be too worried about the birth place of the Frances - I think the others confirm the fit! So I wonder if it is Walton or Walter!?!

They sure seemed to have moved around a bit.

You are a wonderful help,
thank you

I think it's Walter! He's still in Stanton in 1881. I wish I could find the others in 1871!  :-\

Edit! Found them in St George Hanover Square. Was hoping for their Frances to be still at home so as to discount her - unfortunately she's not with them ... (do you want the details?)

Yes I'd love the details, thank you.
Frances married in 1870 (Lambeth Surrey) which explains why you cant' find her (!)- Her daughter was born at St George Han Sq in 1880, as were her husband and children.
She married Charles Spraggs (he's the one with the Scots Guard) there has been no success in locating either of them in 1871, though I do have her census info from 1881 to 1901.

I'm wondering who Mimi was the wife of... does the forward slash imply that they are two families in the same household?

thanks (again!!)

Slash is same address, separate household  :)

I'm not quite sure about the wife's first name :P Can't seem to find them on any other census either :-\
By elimination, I'd say we should suspect Alfred but who knows! (In 1871, there is an Alfred lodging in Bedminster Somerset, married, 25, Engine fitter at works - but he may belong to the other Mayhew family!! ).

Might be Maria??
Marriages 2nd Q 1867  Elsdon  Eliza    Wandsworth  1d 742
MAYHEW  Alfred     Wandsworth  1d 742
Roberts  Frederick Samuel     Wandsworth  1d 742
Withall  Maria     Wandsworth  1d 742

I don't think it was Walter, those marriages seem even less likely....

Well I've got stuff to work with, anyway! You've certainly helped us on our way!

Hi Ard
I have just spotted this conversation.
Do you know if this Mayhew family is linked to the Francis MAYHEW of Metfield, Suffolk mentioned in the Bastardy examination of Mary ELMER 10 Feb 1757.
The latter unmarried couple are my 5Xgreat grandparents.
Best regards
