MAYHEW 51 & 61
« on: Saturday 10 November 07 03:31 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can do a look-up for me. I'm trying to help an elderly relative trace back her family. One of her great grandmother's was Frances (Fanny) MAYHEW, born about 1850. She is in the 1851 census (age 1)  in the district of Thingoe, Ixworth where she was born but I don't have the rest of her family, nor could I find her in 1861! She married in 1870 ,so it is only those two years that I'm looking for (although if other family members, esp.  her parents are still around beyond that, we would welcome any such info!

cheers,

ard

Oh - it was seeming rather simple!

Is that the only one you found for 1861? It is interesting that Alfred and France(i)s fit in both families but the Mary in 1861 is a lot younger than the Ann in 1851 (hmm or are you saying that the family of Francis is also around in 1861)!

On free bmd there were two births for a Frances Mayhew in Thingoe - one in 1849 and one in 1850 (I was beginning to think that there was an error and they were one in the same)

That's a bigger picture than I was counting on!!! :P

I'll see what we can make of it!

HMMMM. And Frances seemed to have had only one child that she named Beatrice! If it had been Rebecca,Selina, Walter or Alfred - I might have gone Ah ha! But alas...

You know I always wonder about "pauper" Would the person answer that to the question of "occupation?"?  That would surprise me, but then what would be said for the census taker to write it - especially if they aren't living in a workhouse...

Thanks for looking Tati. I'm not sure how I'm going to untangle that one!

cheers,

I'm not a specialist at all but I suppose pauper would simply mean that they received parish relief (someone more knowledgeable will correct me).

Why not try to get hold of the Frances' marriage cert to check her father's name?  :)

Yes, that's an idea.

The more I think of it, I think she is the younger of the two. From free BMD, the two Frances were each born in the 4th quarter of 1859 and 1850. From the census returns, Frances' age tends towards 1851.

I wonder where that family was in 1851 though. The father seems not to have been with them in 1861; the child before Frances was born in Kent and the youngest was born in Yorkshire - so perhaps they moved around a bit.

Frances married into a military family so perhaps her father was also ? Might explain the apparent movement of the family....
