My gr-grandfather and grgrmother lived at 6 Milliken Street in 1894.  Anyone any ideas where this was??  My father thinks it was off Divis Street.

Have an old Belfast map which lists it with Ross Street (off Falls Road) but there are so many wee streets that I can't find it on the map. Also tried GoogleEarth but nothing showing for it. I'm sure someone here will be able to pinpoint its location better for you.

As a bit of background information, Milliken Street was named after Israel Milliken who was a United Irishman in 1798.  This guy also has a street called Israel Street named after him on the Shankill.
As it happens he wasn't a participant in the rebellion because he was arrested in 1797 and not released from Kilmainham until 1799 thus was safely tucked up out of harms way.  Otherwsie, I might not be here today  :o

Going through old posts and found this one - have you already found the information that you were looking for earlier? Since then lots of Irish resources have come online including the 1901 and 1911 census records.

See here for list of people in Milliken St.- it's in Falls D.E.D.

The street's still listed in the same D.E.D. in 1911- see here

1880 directory (see ANTRIM RESOURCES for links to lots of other ones) lists Milliken St. off Ross St. (Albert Street to Panton Street) with the following street off Ross St.: Lemon, Peel, Colin, Alma, Omar, Balaklava, Milliken, Balaklava, Milton, Ormond.
Have checked Google Maps and I found Ross st. off Albert St. but none of the others listed- Google Streetview is available for this area and shows fairly recent house so it looks like the whole area has been redeveloped in recent years.

Large portions of Belfast were destroyed during the Blitz so it's possible this was why the area changed.

Hello! I know the answer to this.. Milliken street was off Falls road, in between Panton street and Balaklava Street. It existed until the troubles. If you visit PRONI online historical maps, you can see it on the early maps. My Nan grew up on this road.

Welcome to Rootschat but this thread was started in 2007 and original poster hasn't been logged in since 2010 (and apparently the email address they are registered here with no longer works).
