John Hammond Joyce
« on: Thursday 08 November 07 16:45 GMT (UK) »
I have come to a halt in my searches about my g.g. grandfather and am hoping that someone can help.

The family knew him as John Hammond, but when I found his marriage certificate he is shown as being John Hammond Joyce, son of Robert Hammond.

In the census returns 1851 to 1891 he is shown as John Hammond, born about 1835 in Billingford, Norfolk.

In the 1841 census, I think this might be him –
HO107/763/2/12/18 – Bawdeswell, Norfolk
Name         Age   Occupation   Birth Place
Mary Joice      30                      Norfolk
John Joice       6     Scholar        Norfolk
William Joice      1                       Norfolk
Robert Hammond    25     Ag labourer     Norfolk
Alice Buchan          70   Ind                Norfolk

I also have a marriage certificate for a Robert Hammond (Labourer, father John Hammond) and Mary Josh (spinster, no father listed) on 1 Nov 1844 at Worthing, Norfolk, which may fit with the later census entries –

1851 Worthing, Norfolk
HO107/1825/501/7
Name          Related   Age   Occupation        Birth Place
Robert Hammond    Head           39     Ag labourer         Worthing, Norfolk
Mary Hammond     Wife              41                         Gately, Norfolk
John Hammond      Son              15       Tan Yard Servant     Billingford, Norfolk
Robert Hammond     Son               8       Scholar         Bawdeswell, Norfolk
Ann Hammond       Dau                5        Scholar          Worthing, Norfolk
Elizabeth Hammond Dau              3                       Worthing, Norfolk

A few years ago I wrote to the Norfolk Record Office and they did a search of the baptism registers of Billingford near Dearham for 1834 – 1838, but could not find an entry for John Hammond/Joyce.

Any ideas about where I go from here would be greatly appreciated.

As they are living in Bawdeswell in 1841 maybe you should search the parish records for there? you will be able to order the films for a couple of quid.

Thanks Pauline.

I think that some wider researches are needed.

Thank you for your interest.

Re. Mary Joice, I did have that information but I didn't know what is meant by the term "base child".  Having researched that term I now know what it means so thank you for helping to improve my general knowledge.  The fact that she was illegitimate, with her father being unknown, leaves a big hole in my comprehensive family tree, but sadly that's the way it's destined to be.

Re. John Hammond, he's my great-granduncle so your information about his baptism has allowed me to carry out further research on him, and so improve my family tree.  Thank you for that.

Best regards
