Tullylish parish

 I have just discovered a book called "Linen, Family, and Community in Tullylish, County Down, 1690-1914" by  Marilyn Cohen. publ Dublin: Four Courts, 1997.  Does anyone have a copy and able to tell me if there is any reference to Leckey or McKenna names in it?

Yes I have found Ros Davies wonderful site this week and only wish I'd known of it a few weeks earlier but then I didn't know of the Tullylish connection until I got to Ireland and discovered that my Leckie family were from a townland called Mullabrack in Tullylish and not the parish Mullaghbrack in Co Armagh where I'd been looking for them for a few years.  I must be grateful that I did learn of this mistake while I was close enough to visit the Tullylish area as well.

Cohen does not include names of people interviewed or mentioned in her index.  I skimmed and did not see either name in the text.  She is discussing the impact of emergent industries  such as Dunbar, Dunbarton, Bell, and Blane on the people's lives in the area, both in and out of the workplace and  class, gender, and religious issues.    She also looks at paternalism at the companies which especially attracted female workers.

It is not a  book on people  like Ruddell's two books on the Gilford families who moved to New York's branch of Dunbarton Mills.  However, Cohen's book will describe the conditions and pressures on the families such as yours.   

Do you have anything on  Henry McKenna with children John, Francis and James b. abt 1870's?

Thanks KatC for your interest in my query.  I don't have anything on Henry McKenna or his family. All I have is Sarah Ann Leckey born Mullabrack c 1837 with parents Hugh and Catherine nee McKenna. She had two younger siblings that I know of William born c 1840 and Eliza born c 1844. Catherine died before Nov 1850 when Hugh was married for second time at Old Monkland in Scotland. The 3 children with Sarah listed as Ann were with Hugh and his second wife at Whiflat village Old Monkland in 1851.  I don't know who were parents of Catherine or whether she died in Ireland or Scotland

I think you are working with an area  of Tullylish more closely tied to the markets in  Banbridge than to Lurgan.  I don't know very much about the Banbridge region.

  There seem to be many Lecky or Leckey families on Raymond's Country Down site

so perhaps you should look for early families to have come from that area.

Yes, that is the family.  Thanks for the dates.  Son James McKenna married Rebecca Duprey with parents William John Duprey and Susan Walker of Corcreany.

 A Canadian Duprey once said he was related to the Andrew McCleary line. We would dearly love to know if this is the connection and more about the McCleary  line.

 John married Rebecca Phillips and lived in Lurgan. Francis married Rachel Walker.  The only grandchild I've noticed is James Henry b. 1897 to Francis.
