Hi all, I came across the linked picture recently in a book called "Victorian and Edwardian Devon from old photographs" by Brian Chugg.

It is obviously from the same day as cath's at #191.

In the book it say's the bride is Sally Penfold and her groom an Orchard and that the man second from the left is her father-in-law, Joe Orchard - this is at odds with the note on Cath's.

The ackowledgement in the book says it comes from The Museum of English Rural Life at Reading University so I got the link for the picture from there.

You can go to http://www.reading.ac.uk/merl/commercialservices/merl-imagesandreprographics.asp and click on "Browse our online database" on the right hand menu and put Penfold in. Amongst the other things it finds is the same picture of James Penfold's brush wagon which Cath also has a copy of

Ok...so I think I am joined to this as follows:

Robert Penfold b1816 m Amelia Page b1818
Their daughter
Elizabeth Penfold b1859 Dorchester d1925 Weymouth (m 1887) John Mayne b1856 Surrey
Their children
John Mayne b 1888 Swanage
Robert Mayne b 1888 Swanage
Elizabeth Mayne b 1891 Weymouth
Rachel Vera b1895 Weymouth d1947 Sydney Australia (m1918) Walter Percy Scott AIF in Chickerell
Patience b 1900 Wyke Regis

Can any confirm that I've go the right Elizabeth that married John Mayne?

Thanks,  Alison

Hi Alison

A John Mayne did marry in 1887 Jan/Feb/Mar Dorchester  5a 608, having looked for a Elizabeth Penfold yes there is one same place date etc and ref No which suggests they wed each other
have you bought this certificate ? it should give you fathers this would help trace Elizabeth Penfold side & John's factually

I found Elizabeth birth register - 1859 Dorchester Jan/Feb/Mar 5a 362

1861 Rowcomb Lane, Uplyme Axminster Devonshire
Robert with Amelia - Robert M  23 Southampton - Thomas 12 Exeter- James 11 Bridgewater
Holiff/Olive 8 Dorset - Henry 6 Yeovil - Elizabeth 2 Dorchester - Priscilla 6mths Dorchester
Maria Thompson  29 Hampshire Sister  & Henry Thompson 6 Bath Nephew

Maria was a Penfold who wed Henry Thompson 1853 Southampton
It would appear she was daughter of a John & Charlotte baptised 1831 3rd July Brockenhurst Hampshire - John occupation was dealer in Brushes,so that would then make Robert also a son if her brother, although nothing proved to back this up other than entry on this census.

1871  Near Seaway Lane, Abbotsbury Weymouth Dorset
lists Robert & Ameila with their children  - Thomas b 1848 Devon - Harry b 1856 Somerset - Robert 1851 Devon- Holiff/Olive 1853 Dorset - Elizabeth 1858 Dorset -Priscilla 1860 Dorset

1881 Hod Hill Lane, Shillingstone Aka Shilling Okeford Dorset
Robert Penfold 65 Wiltshire -Brushmaker - Amelia 65 Kent- Elizabeth  21 Dorset - Priscilla 18 Dorset with married children
+
Harry Penfold 25 Somerset - Charlotte 22 Hampshire - Henry 6 Hampshire - Wm 5 Dorset
Charlotte 3 Dorset - Amelia 3mths

James Penfold 27 Bridgewater Somerset - Priscilla 24 Portsmouth - Priscilla 6 Somerset- John 5 Dorset-  Patience 3 Dorset

Thomas Penfold 30 Dorset - Patience 22 Sussex - Patience 9 Dorset - Richard 5 Dorset
There are some more names a couple could William 23 & Olive 24  ? daughter Betsy  2 unable to read correctly surname could be Robert daughter Holiff?

I have looked at 1891 & 1901 & 1911 Census

1891 1, Caravan, Billnton, Stanton Drew Clutton Somerset
John Mayne 25 b 1866 Surrey - traveller - Elizabeth 32 b 1859 Dorchester
John  6- Robert 5- Elizabeth 1 -
+
Charlotte Penford 15 Dorset - servant
Henry Penford 20 Hampshire -servant
Bill Riddle 48 Wiltshire- servant
Also a family of Walker in caravan David 54? Elizabeth 54 - Arthur unable to read place of births
Think Charlotte & Henry would be Elizabeth brother's children Harry

1901 3, Devon Terrace, Weymouth finds family of John & Elizabeth Mayne living in a caravan in Cemetery lane
John 35 Hawker - Elizabeth 40-John 13 -Robert 13- Elizabeth 10 - Rachel 6 - Patience 6mths

1911 Putton Lane Chickerell Weymouth in 1 room
Alfred Penfold 26 ( b 1885) married 6mths born Hampshire greengrocer/hawker - Cissie 21  b Dorset
on next page
Lower Chickerell Road Chickerell Weymouth
John Mayne 45 greengrocer/hawker - Elizabeth 45 married 24 yrs 7 children 2 died/5 living
John 23-married -Robert 23 -single- Rachel 17 single- Patience 11
Henry Penfold 50 (b 1861) single -servant greengrocer/hawker no place of origin given
likely the son of Elizabeth brother Harry who was with her in 1891

Robert & Amelia their first child Robert was christened in 1838  25th March Minstead Hampshire
and they married in 1836 26th Dec Bishop Waltham Hampshire- Amelia nee Page

Rachel Penfield 1840 13th Dec Cranborne, Dorset
John Penfold 1843 8th Jan Privett, Hampshire
Olive Penfold christened 19th Dec 1852 Winfrith-Newburgh, Dorset
Priscilla Penfield 1860 28th Oct Hilfield Dorset
Elizabeth Penfold christened 1st Jan 1860 West Chickerell, Dorset

I know that the Robert Penfold bapt 1832 Hampshire son of John & Harriet James married Defiance Smith then lived with her sister Louisa Smith when Defiance died, having several children by both sisters who are part of my family line, so not same person.
John & Harriet also had
Son John Penfold christened 1834 29th June Hale Hampshire, but they came from  Hythe Kent
Son William Penfold christened 1836 31st July Pimperne, Dorset
Daughter Charlotte christened 1838 2nd Sept North Stoneham Hampshire
Daughter Elizabeth Penfold 1845 14th Sept Weymouth Dorset
Son Alfred Penfold 1847 7th November Chard Somerset

The earliest John Penfold I can find was christened 1813 19th Sept Portsmouth St Thomas
son of John & Elizabeth Hawker - could they also be parents of Robert if b 1816?

A John Penfold & Elizabeth Thompson banns read 1817 9th April Goudhurst Kent

John Penfold & Harriet James banns were read in Pimperne Dorset 1831 2nd May

could their be a connection ?
