1861 census - George W Wareham b 1854 London
« on: Sunday 04 November 07 12:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

Please, I would like a lookup in the 1861census for George William WAREHAM whose birth was registered Dec qtr 1854, Strand MDX.  I am hoping his parents are William Wareham and Mary Ann and he could have two older sisters at least.  Thank you, Gazania

Hi Gazania

A George W Wareham aged 6 is a scholar, along with other students of different names in the household of a Warehouseman, so not much help to find out the parents names.

Theres two in 1861, born circa 1854 in that overall part of London...

one actually born Marylebone, but mother is a Sarah ...

t'other lad is a George W. - scholar - born Kingsland, Middx, so not sure on that as a PoB !

He is in is in Hammersmith, but in a private house headed by a David Moss, from Canterbury. He is a Warehouseman, so its not a school ?

RG9/23; Folio: 6; Page: 11

lets see if we can find the parents ...

Thank you, Wozzle,Newf,Cazay.

Strange to farm kids out so early.  Could I be cheeky and ask for a lookup in the 1871 census.  I cannot find GW in the 1881 census but then I eventually found his socalled parents under the spelling of Wenham in the 1881 census.  I want to be sure GW belongs to the family before I invest in a birth cert.

GW marries in 1882 Wandsworth SRY to a lady who could be his sister's husband's sister.  GW & wife then goes to New Zealand.  Gazania

cant see him in '71 or '81 .... if it wasnt for the fact that you have his marriage and emmigration I'd be tempted by a couple of Death Index entries in Westminster & St G Hanover Square pre-1861 census date !

Do you have the marriage Cert ? His occupation 1882 might help find him in 1881 if its at all unusual ?

1881 is about the only census searchable on ocupation ...

Thank you, Newf,

You have confirmed for me that GW is not on the 1871 or 1881 censuses or not readily found. That is at least step one.  According to various family stories, the socalled parents had 15 children all named with approx dates of birth.  Yet I can only find  some daughters living with the parents in any of the census. !5 birth certs would break the bank.  The huge Wareham family is very complicated and spread over the world.

But thank you.  You have been a great help. Gazania

Hi Gazania,

We were in contact a couple of years ago re my BIRD family.

You may well have all the answers by now as it is 4 years since your post.  George W Wareham was on the 1871 census as "George W Warsham" with parents William and Mary Ann.

On the 1861 census he was just 6 and a scholar living away from home.  I have his parents on the 1861 census and he is definitely not with them.

George W Wareham married Jessie Devereaux Harry in Surrey 1882.  I haven't found him on the 1881 census.  Both George and Jessie emigrate to New Zealand and have children born in NZ from 1883.

Let me know if you are missing any information as I have a lot on the Wareham family both in England and New Zealand.

Simon
