You're very welcome, John - after all, it looks as if we're distantly related!

I think I've just found Major Mountain's second marriage on the IGI ( not a submitted one, thank goodness). Its in Woolley, which I had to look up on the map but is only about 5 miles from Flockton.

4 April 1768 Major Mountain & Sarah North

less than 2 months before the baptism of their daughter Beatrice - obviously named after his late wife.

So it looks as though Sarah is the mother of my Mary Mountain but Beatrice is the mother of your Elizabeth.

Hi All,
I'm going offline now, but will get the info tomorrow re the ENGLISH family at Emley  ...... I didn't look that far back! I'll also have a look at Thornhill for James FIRTH's baptism, but if it isn't there, then it looks as though Christine has found him.

Since my last visit here, I got out my microfiche reader to look up the marriage of James and Elizabeth, as I just happen to have bought the fiche which has 1786 on it  ........ I was looking for the Parish listed at the time of marriage. Although it does say Thornhill, this means that he may have only been living in the Parish for a minimum of three weeks  ....... but he could have been living there for years   ........ moved from Dewsbury if he was born there.

This info is copied from the microfiche of the actual Parish Register, the old alphabet is used  ..... the funny *f* written instead of an *s*  but that's the only difference in my typing it out. This shows the difference between an Index, a transcription and the real thing!

Parish of Thornhill:

Page 76
Entry no: 224 in Register

James Firth and Elizabeth Mountain both of this Parish were married in this Church by Banns this ninth day of August in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty six.
By me J. Greenwood Curate of Thornhill

This marriage was solemnized between us:
{The Mark of James X Firth
{The Mark of Eliz X Mountain

In the presence of:
{Thomas Wilcock
{John Rhodes

The X's where they both made their mark, is in exactly the same place as I have typed it ...... between their forename and surname.

That's it for now.
Diane

P.S. Just read that you've found the second marriage  ...... Great!!!!

Hi All,
I finished the pages forward 1784-1812 for Flockton and found the following for the MOUNTAIN family:

Major MOUNTAIN buried 30 Sept 1796 Flockton
Beattrix, daughter of Majer MOUNTAIN buried 22 Aug 1804 Flockton
Unfortunately, I didn't spot a death for Sarah (nee North) maybe I missed it?

As and when, I'll work backwards from 1759 (which is the year I started in the first place for you) to 1713, to see if I can tie my MOUNTAIN family in with yours  ....... all new messages will be added to this thread, unless the moderators move it. In which case I'll start a new thread for Mountain family in the W.R. Yorkshire board.

Re The FIRTH's:

Great news for you John!
Although there are no James FIRTH's baptised at Thornhill 1745-1775 and there are no baptisms at Thornhill from 1786-1800 for James & Elizabeth's children ...... it looks as though Christine is right about James' Parents! I think the baptism below will please you:

Samuel  bap. 04 May 1788 Flockton, son of James FIRTH
No more baptisms at Flockton for anymore children. Perhaps James & Elizabeth went back to Dewsbury or even Mirfield?

Re The ENGLISH's:

No INGLISH marriages at Emley either, but a few baptisms, including another sibling of Batrix.

Georgius INGLISH bap. 29 Aug 1731 Emley, son of Josephi
(Looks like the Joseph who married Ann, named his first born son after his father)

Franciscus INGLISH bap. 13 Jan 1693/94 Emley, son of Georgij
Martha INGLISH bap. 09 Feb 1695/96 Emley, daughter of Georgij
Georgius ENGLISH bap. 09 May 1700 Emley, son of Georgij
Anna ENGLISH  bap. 18 April 1703 Emley, daughter of Georgij
Josephus and Benjamin INGLISH  bap. 09 Feb 1706/07 Emley, twin sons of Georgij
Maria INGLISH bap. 07 May 1710 Emley, daughter of Georgij

Have fun,
Diane

Hi Diane,

Yes, it is great news re: my James Firth family.

I've learned a lot these past few days about my ancestors.  Thanks to you, and to Jill, Christine, Anna, Scribles, et al.  I've a lot to digest, then hopefully this info will lead me to expanding my ancestral net further.

Many thanks folks!

Yes - thanks Diane. As John says - there's a lot to digest there.

I'm already trying to follow my new found North ancestors on another thread though it always gets a bit harder around the early 1700s in this neck of the woods.

Thanks again for all the help. Very much appreciated.

Jill

Hi All  :)

I managed to connect 'our' Mountain families, even though mine is a connection by marriage only!

I couldn't get any further back than Joseph Mountain b. Abt. 1700 buried 21 Jul 1763 Flockton, married Ellin Whittaker 17 Nov 1728 at Thornhill. She was buried 12 Apr 1770 Flockton.

You're both descended from their son, Major, but by different wives, as you mentioned. My Harriet NAYLOR who married George MOUNTAIN b. 1857 Flockton (Parish Register for baptisms was destroyed for that time) is descended from your Major's brother, Thomas.

He was bap. 17 Feb 1744 Flockton, buried 18 Apr 1814 Flockton, aged 70 yrs. He married Clemencia Bedford 22 Apr 1764 Thornhill and she was buried 06 May 1824 Flockton, aged 81 yrs.
