Emley PRs - Baptism look ups
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 20:46 GMT (UK) »
I'd like to take Scrabble up on the kind offer to do baptism look ups in Emley.

I hope I'm right in thinking that Thornhill and Flockton come under this parish.

At the moment I have the following from some of those IGIs which are submitted by members, rather than actual transcriptions, so would be really grateful to know if they're correct:

Mary Mountain baptised 27 Aug 1772 Flockton, daughter of Major & Beatrice. (also, are there any siblings?)

I have Major Mountain marrying Beatrice English 17 Sep 1759 in Thornhill.

Then,
Major Mountain baptised Flockton 20 Feb 1737, s/o Joseph & (I think) Ellen (nee Whittaker)
Beatrice English baptised Emley 29 Jul 1739, d/o Joseph & Ann.

If it's not asking too much, is there any sign of any baptisms for that last pair of parents? And, just to be really greedy, any siblings along the line would be a bonus!! I've assumed that somewhere back along the line there must have been someone with the surname Major, and that's where its use as a first name came from.

I'd be really interested to know where you managed to get hold of these? I was told (I think, by the local FHS) that they hadn't yet been transcribed.

Thanks,

Jill

Hi Jill,

I have just looked on HDFHS and they now have the transcribed records for Emley, maybe they are a recent addition.

Flockton was consecrated in 1699 as a chapel of ease to mother church in Thornhill. Rebuilt between 1755-1762 then in 1860 the ecclesiastical Parish of Flockton cum Denby Grange was created from parts of Kirkheaton and Thornhill and it became the parish church.

Hemsworth - Doncaster

Unfortunately, no Anna - I don't have an Ancestry sub.

However, I've just checked out the HDFHS website and, as Christine has pointed out, the PRs are now available to buy. That'll teach me - I haven't been on their website for absolutely ages!!  ::)

Sorry I haven't replied before now, but I just managed to read your first messages last night, but owing to family committments today  ...... I've only just managed to log on again.

I shall look for them all tomorrow sometime though, I promise.

Just to put you all in the picture  ....... yes, I bought all the Emley stuff from Huddersfield FHS some time ago, but they are Indexes of Baptisms etc. not full transcriptions.

The stuff on Ancestry (which I downloaded the lot to my computer) are photographs of Transcriptions so although they do have more detail than the Indexes have  ....... they are not the full copies of the Parish Registers. These are on microfiche or microfilm only, as I have purchased quite a lot direct from Wakefield Archives, (not for Emley, but for other Parishes).

Below is the link and the details, where you can buy for £8, a CD which is an exact copy of the transcript pages on Ancestry  ....... mine arrived by post today  ....... it's in a beautiful blue cover too!

I bought it because of the index of names, which saves trawling the Ancestry pages.

http://anguline.co.uk/

The Parish Registers of Emley in Yorkshire.
Published in 1920.

Transcripts of the registers for the parish of Emley, Yorkshire.
Contains :
Baptisms, Marriages & Burials 1600 - 1812.

Complete with indexes of names and places.

A digital version of the original book, in PDF format.
Viewable on any computer using Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Anguline Research Archives

After clicking the link, click on Parish Registers in the left hand menu  ....... then Emley is near to the bottom of the page.

Thanks Scribles,

Looks like a case of some 'lateral thinking' needed in my quest for James Firth's parents.  Must try the Flockton, Thornhill and Mirfield records.  Anyone got access to them?

Yes, I have, but not for Mirfield. I also have MOUNTAIN's in Flockton, a George married my Harriet NAYLOR. I'm going to try and look for your FIRTH's when I have some time ..... see message below at the end.

MOUNTAIN info:

Ann MOUNTAINE bap. 24 Dec 1759 Flockton, daughter of Major
Ninah MOUNTAIN bap. 24 Jan 1761 Flockton, daughter of Major
Elizabeth MOUNTAINE bap. 25 Nov 1763 Flockton, daughter of Major

Beatrice MOUNTAIN bap. 01 May 1768 Flockton, daughter of Major
Beatrice MOUNTAIN bur. 17  May 1768 Flockton, daughter of Major

Mary MOUNTAIN bap. 27 Aug 1772 Flockton, daughter of Major
John MOUNTAINE bap. 02 June 1776 Flockton, son of Major
Frances MOUNTAIN bap. 28 Feb 1778 Flockton, daughter of Major

I started trawling the pages at 1759 and I made notes of the names associated with your Major, from thereon so here's the info. I just hope you can sort it, as one thing does confuse me ...... a certain burial. Either, there are two Major MOUNTAIN's in Flockton round about the same time, both married to a  Betrice or YOUR Major married again?

Betrice the wife of Major MOUNTAINE buried 22 August 1766 Flockton
Joseph the son of Major MOUNTAIN buried 14 Dec 1766 Flockton - no baptism entry between 1759 and this date, perhaps Betrice died in childbirth and Major never got around to having their son baptised?

Elizabeth MOUNTAIN buried 13 April 1781 Flockton

Beatrix MOUNTAIN bap. 26 Sep 1784 Flockton

I've stopped at 1784, but as soon as I have the time, I'll start again from there and see what else I can find. If you have any more info at all to help me, will you please tell me?
