Tate and Lyle staff query completed
« on: Thursday 01 November 07 01:15 GMT (UK) »
My husband knows nothing about his family in England, he does know that his grandfather came down from Scotland with the shipping magnate Lyle, which became Tate and Lyle, the sugar people, his grandmother was previously Mary Gilchrist and on marriage she became Bishop. It is this Mr Bishop I am trying to trace as a staff member of Tate and Lyle, their son was born in 1908 (my husband's father), so I would guess their d.o.b. to be about 1870/80. My purpose in finding this Mr Bishop is to get a name so that I can then do the obvious and try to trace them.
The mother of Mary Gilchrist was Jane Sinclair of (I believe) Ayr in Scotland or maybe Greenock, or that area, so that was a Gilchrist - Sinclair marriage - have had no luck there yet!

Thanks - will keep this to show my husband - he is at work right now, he is now becoming interested in his history after years of saying -"don't bother"

I am the great great grandson of Sir Henry Tate
My father worked for T&L most of his life
Colin Lyle has written a book on the history of the firm
I have not read this but it might help
