Plomesgate Workhouse - FISK
« on: Tuesday 30 October 07 18:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I am trying to find out if there may be a baptism record for my gg grandfather Samuel Fisk. I have his birth cert but as he was base born the father is not listed. He was born 25 May 1847 at Plomesgate Union Workhouse, Wickham Market. His mother was Mary Fisk. I have no idea if he was baptised or not or if any records exist but as I am in Somerset I would be very grateful for some help. Thanks in advance. Bryan.

Helo Dangerous,

We have Fisk ancestors in Framlingham  :D

For information on the Fisk families of Suffolk, do have a look at Hugh's wonderful web site at
www.fiskes.co.uk
He has all the information (as those of us with Fisk/e ancestors send him our info).
He also has links to other web sites, such as Brian Fisk who is another Suffolk Fisk researcher with lots of information.

SM ...

Every time I find an ancestor,
I have to find two more!

SUFFOLK - Pendle, Stygall, Pipe, Fruer, Bridges, Fisk, Bellamy, Sparham - all link to  Framlingham
DERBY - Bridges and Frost (originally Framlingham/Parham)
NOTTINGHAM - Lambert & Selby
BERKSHIRE/then Hammersmith LDN - Fulker
LDN/MDX - Murray, Clancy, Broker, Hoskins, Marsden, Wilson, Sale

GGfather Michael Wilson born Cork, lived Fulham London - moved to Boston USA 1889, what happened next?

Hi suffolkmawther,
Thanks for that but I have already checked out Hugh's site and have found that he has Samuel muddled up with another Samuel Fisk. It is an easy error though because both of them moved to Lambeth, Surrey. I have not seen the link to Brian Fisk though and will check this out.
What I really wanted was for anyone going to either of the Suffolk records office's to try and find a possible baptism record although I am not sure where he may have been baptised if at all. I have been led to believe that the workhouse had its own chapel but am not sure about this.
Regards, Bryan.

Hello Bryan,

Somewhere in my study (posh name for my corner of what was the children's playroom many years ago), I do have a copy of the Wickham Market Workhouse booklet.

However, I have just checked Peter's web site and the map of the Plomesgate Workhouse at Wickham shows an Independent Chapel across from the Workhouse (and I am pretty sure it is still there).

The baptisms etc at the Workhouse will probably be recorded in the PRs for Wickham Market All Saints - unless your Fisk family were non-conformists.

The Workhouse web site
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/

Records held at the Ipswich branch of the Suffolk Record Office - taken from Peter's Workhouses web site
Suffolk Record Office, Gatacre Road, Ipswich IP1 2LQ. Holdings include: Guardians' minute books (1837-1930); Births and deaths (1914-36); Creed register (1926-36); Inmates' property register (1920-35); etc.

PRs for Suffolk are at all three branches of the Suffolk RO  ;)

Thanks again SM.
It is the baptism record that I would like to find. If it is in the PR's for Wickham Market All Saints where would I be able to find these records, or is there anyone out there that would be willing to have a look for me? If these records dont survive is there a bishops transcript around somewhere?
I will be away for a few days so will not be able to view replies straight away.
Thanks, Bryan.

There is a Volunteer on the Suffolk Look Up Exchange at www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk who will check the PRs for Wicker Basket sorry, bad habit, Wickham Market.  If you contact her she may be able to find the baptism for you.

Alternatively there may be sks on this Board who is going along to the SRO in the next few days and would be willing to check for you  ;D

As I mentioned before, all PRs for Suffolk are held at all three branches of the SRO.
