....but it poses the question whos her mum and why is he on the wed cert if hes unmarried

You canot rely on 'condition' as to marriage (or in fact not much at all really  ;) ) as given on a census entry ....

Given all the facts, I'd say she's registered under another name and if her DoB can be relied on, also on the Census under another surname ....

Female Attwell Q1 1877 Windsor 2c 448

I think this is her birth

maybe she didn't have a name but they had to register her within the 42 days 6 wk limit to avoid a financial penalty.

My view on this Edward chap is that a middle name of Douglas in conjunction with the At[t]well is virtually unique ....

But as to what his real relationship was to your lass, who knows, I've seen more 'fabricated' fathers on Marriage certs than .......  ;)

Again the Marriage Cert - is it the original, as signed by all parties, or a modern copy (which is in fact a copy of the Register entry, and hence has no original signatures ... )

He is at the 1891 census refn I gave, albeit transcribed Alwell ....

actaully i would ask the register office first if they could tell you either yes / no if the father was Edward before spending your money.

Newf said to check the 1881 census , which i hadn't done before ( as looking for a birth) having done so now i find :~

Elizabeth Attwell , scholar, age 4 so b. abt 1877 Windsor resident in the workhouse (which is where she was born.) also residents of the workhouse were Elizabeth age 24, a female servant  and Alice (how old was ALice?)

RG11 1325 107 3

perhaps the Female Attwell birth  was Elizabeth.  :-\
