GERMANY: What info would a 1910 German birth cert tell me?
« on: Saturday 27 October 07 18:35 BST (UK) »
My grandmother was born in Berlin - Lichtenberg in 1910.  I have a copy of her baptism certificate, which tells me:
her full name, date of birth, date of baptism,
name, address occupation and religion of father,
name, maiden name and religion of mother.

If I were to get a copy of her birth certificate, would it tell me any more than this?  (And if so, then what?)
Bristow, Horsleydown; Glasscodine, anywhere; Ferrier, Edinburgh; Lucey, Bermondsey; Horner, Essex; Bowskill, Elkesley; Salter, Great Yarmouth; Vowles, Bedminster/Cardiff; Morgan, Breconshire; Vidgen, New Romney

Hello  there,

The only additional information that you might see on a birth certificate would be the place of birth, e.g. the hospital, and the home address of the parents.

However, you can look up the family in the Berliner Adressbuecher (Berlin Address Books) at http://adressbuch.zlb.de/ to find their address anyway.

Personally, I would not bother obtaining the official birth cert.

Justin

Thanks, Justin.  The baptism certificate gives the parents' address anyway, so it sounds as though the birth certificate wouldn't really tell me anything I don't already know.
That's a shame - I was hoping it would have details of where and when the parents got married.  I have copies of a couple of marriage certificates and there is so much more info on those than there is on an English one that I was hoping the birth cert would be similar.

Hello,
on German marriage certificates you usually find more information than on birth certificates. On birth certificates, depending on the town where it was issued, sometimes even the place of birth and home address of parents is not given. Thus, if you already have the date of birth and the names of the parents, there is not much more you can find on it. Thus there I agree with Justin, I would not bother to obtain these records. The only reason I ordered birth certificates in the past is the fact that there are sometimes also notes in the margin, stating for example when the person moved away or died. But you can not rely on that.

Hello
I would agree to some extent with Justin & Rossi
As I lived as a child in Germany up to 1938, where my Father was working for an English sister Company, then in 1938 we returned to England. I served in the Army mid 1944 on , and later with the occupation attached to the CCG Control Commision for Germany. In later years I returned to marry my German wife, and in that time learnt quite a lot about BMD within Nord Rhein Provinz, later to be renamed Nord Rhein Westfalen,. in Düsseldorf and surrounding areas.
My wife had a Family Book, (Deutsches Einheits, Familien Stammbuch) with all the history going back to the mid 1800's.
Full details of parents, and all children were on pages in date order. Birth, where, when, time, and date.
Marriages. Full details on adjacent pages regarding the Marriage Certificate = (Bescheinigung über die Eheschließung) . Place of marriage, religion, Full Name, DOB , place, Town/County. Now living with-Name of Wife,DOB, where, & all details as above. My name Surname was added to the end of her Maiden Name-x x  x x . All this was added to the Book, and an additional seperate Certificate was given us both with all our joint details. On her death in 1998 an additional page was added to the F S Buch.

Sorry I was writing this reply, when the site timed out. There was much more to come that I had written, and lost the end......I have waited to get back but lost the end,...it is now very late.... further details of applying for a Cert, please send a private email

Best Wishes
Raphael
