1841 census lookup North Shields
« on: Monday 27 December 04 17:06 GMT (UK) »
I am seeking information for the following people in the 1841 census for North Shields but unfortunately I have no addresses so I am not too confident of the outcome, but it is worth a try!
John Logan age about 16 born Newcastle
Sarah Logan age about 13 born Newcastle/N.Shields
Annie Logan age about 7 born N.Shields
They are possibly living together with the Dodds family as their mother Ann had died in 1838 & their father John was lost at sea on "Windy Monday" in 1839.
Sarah Logan age about 72 born Newcastle
Sarah Dodds age about 37 born N.Shields
William Towell age about 57 born Dover, Kent
Catherine Towell (wife) age about 50 born N. Sunderland/South Shields
Henry Towell (son) age about 16 born N.Shields
Jane Towell (dau) age about 14        "
Mary Anne (dau) age about 11          "
Richard (son) age about 8                 "
Susannah (dau) about 6                    "          Thank you, Graham

Graham,

Logans as Masters and Ship Owners.

In a period from 1786 to 1850s, there were several Logans involved with sailing ships, registered on the River Tyne.

In 1780s onwards.. Thomas Logan of Newcastle, his occupation ranged from Mariner, Master Mariner to Ship Owner.  He was Master of the Kingston and part-owner.     He was involved in several ships.
There was also a Thomas Loggan, who was similar
( might even be same man   ) He part-owned and Mastered the "Peggy & Polly", and was involved with the "Peggy" and the "Polly".

There was a Joseph Logan, out of North and South Shields in 1830>50s .

An Edward Logan and A Thomas Logan , both of Newcastle, were joint-owners of the "Carron".

The ship "William"  1810.1844 . This ship was joint-owned by James Logan, a Master Mariner, along with several others. From 22/1/1825, James's ownship ceased and a Joseph Logan , of North Shields was 16 64ths joint owner . Joseph Logan was master of this ship from 10/8/1826 to 30/8/1829.

And finally the only sight of a John Logan was............

The Percy. 1837-1839.
Master from 27/6/1838 to 3/10/1838 was John Logan. Ship was lost 7/1/1839. No Logans were involved in thge ownership of this ship.

Maybe one more ship worth mentioning.....

The Mary, 1824-1836. Originally Joseph Logan, of North Shields,  owned 32 64ths. But he transferred his share thus... 16/64ths to Catherine Watson, widow of  North Shields and 16/64ths to Matthew Hall, butcher of North Shields.

OK one more. Feronig .. register 74/1802 ( 1802 is year)     Owned by the Executor of Thomas Logan.

Thank you so much for your time & efforts on our behalf. The John Logan you found on The Percy must be the one as we had a reference to the death of John at sea on that exact date in a family bible. It said he was lost at sea on Windy Monday which we took to be the name of the ship not the weather forecast!
With regard to the Berwick request, we had already looked at Pigot's Trade Directory but his name is definately James Holme(s) not John.
Thanks again,
Graham

I realize that it's been awhile since this thread was posted, but I'm new here, and when doing a "Loggan" search, this is what came up.  I'm fairly sure the Edward and Thomas Logan (probably meant to be Loggan) are mine.  They were a father and son 4 or 5 generations back on my family tree.  I was wondering where you found this rather detailed information about their ships?  Is it accesible online?  My mother, Margaret Loggan, was the last of that family that I know of.

Thanks,

Jennie

Jennie,

I cribbed all that info from a book ( entitled, I think
"Dictionary of Tyne Ships" , by a local author)

I browse this book from time to time in Newcastle City Library and/or Tyne & wear Archives, Newcastle.

The book mainly consists of three indexes
1) Ships in alpha-order,
2) Masters in surname alpha-order
3) Ship owners "     "    "       "

Michael - I was fascinated to see your reference to Thomas Loggan, Master of the Kingston. I have been searching on-line for him for days.
Loggan (d.1800 aged 60yr) was the son in law of the Newcastle surgeon, Nathaniel Bayles (d. 1791 aged 74yr).
Bayles seems to have had his fingers in lots of pies, including shipping.

A couple of years ago a cache of letters to Nathaniel Bayles from the master of his ship Providence, came to light. Unfortunately most of the collection had been dispersed by the time I came across them. Most of the letters were written by Captain John Ritchie of the Providence.

By the 1780s the Providence had been hired by the navy and become a Transport taking troops over to fight in the war in North America. One letter even refers to Captain Logan of the Kingston which was also out there.

Where does all your information about Loggan come from, as I understand that the "Dictionary of Tyne Sailing Ships" only dates from 1820? Any information about Bayles and his ships would be greatly appreciated.
