http://www.poppyshop.org.uk/somme-1916-poppy-lapel-pin.html

Each poppy that has been produced is made from the fuse shells and the ground of where the battle was and each poppy comes with a certificate commemorating a fallen Soilder and my certificate I received with my poppy was for James chappel.

I am not a relation but I Googled his name and service number off the certificate with my poppy and found this forum about him.

Hi
Sorry its took me a while to reply.
James was born on the 20th October 1887.  He was married to Maria.  He enlisted at Pontefract Barracks with his two brothers, Clifford (My dads father) and William.  He was a Sargent in the Kings Own Light Infantry 1st/4th battalion.
James died at the battle of the Somme on the 5th July 1916.  His body was never recovered.

If you would like the poppy and certificate commemorating James I would quite happily send it to you as he is family and it is a wonderful tribute.

Thank you for telling me about him.

Xx

Have either of you seen the war diary for James's unit for July 1916?  While he isn't mentioned by name, it gives an idea of what was happening at the time he lost his life.

Just clarifying an earlier post, both James and Clifford served in the 1st/4th battalion KOYLI.

Appropriate to be remembering James on this day.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,
