Speakman Document COMPLETED
« on: Friday 26 October 07 14:25 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Have this document referring to my g+ grandfather and having trouble decyphering certain words. Document titled "marriage settlement of Henry and Elizabeth Speakman" . They were married 1/11/1717 Flixton and clearly moved to Astley only to be sent to Worsley. Document seems to be fairly straightforward enforcement of the Poor Law whereby the birth parish is responsible for their welfare however words I can't read seem significant together with title of document itself - seems like they were sent before they became destitute (?).

Any help would be greatly appreciated - tempted to include my own transcription but would like to see what someone more experienced makes of it!

Many thanks.

Hi leeric,

Here's my feeble attempt:

Upon the compl': of the Churchwardens and Overseers of the Poor of Astley in the said County made to us whose names and seals are hereunto Sett Justices of the peace & Quor*: in * for the said County that Henry Spakman and Elizabeth his wife are lately come to Inhabit and reside in Astley * not having Farmed a Farm or don [or ten] points * *: nor done any other Thing to gain a Legall Settlem't there and being poor are likely to become Chargeable thereto and we having Justly? Examined of both of the a'said Compl't upon * We the said Justices do hereby Declare & Adjudge the said Henry Spakman & Elizabeth his wife to be poor and that their last legall Settlem't is in Worsley in the said County and we do hereby order the Overseers of the poor of Astley af'sd to remove and Convey them the said Henry Spakman and Elizabeth his wife to Worsley af'sd the Overseers of the poor whereof are hereby required to * and provide for them, according to law Given under our hands and seals at Wigan? this sixth day of December Ano R R s George...........
[the rest appears to be Latin but my guess would be it means something like 'in the * year of the reign of our Sovereign' and as the year given is 1717 it would be King George I.]

Hi Jill and Oldtimer,

That's fantastic - many thanks for your help - would never have got some of the trickier words. I wonder if "compl" is "complaint"? Still stuck with the "farmed a tenmt etc" as the end looks like Ann (the right sweep looks like the same as the "n" in "Magna").

Thanks again.

See you, Lee.

Hi Lee,

If I knew the answers I would have made a better job of it!!

Good luck - maybe someone else will have a shot at it.

Hi!

The word that looks like Ann is an abbreviation. You can tell that by the : after it.
