The Wherry Inn, Wyle Cop,

Hi folks

I believe that my  gt gran's family  ran 'The Wherry Inn' at 55 Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury, from 1891 onwards...til not sure when.

My gt gran's mother and father were John Edwards b. 1848 Wellington and Elizabeth Edwards (nee Griffiths) b1845 Wellington, and she was Fanny Edwards b. 1885 Atcham who married Charles Anslowb1881.

Is there anyone out there that has a link to this branch of my  tree...or know anything about  'The Wherry Inn'. In research I found it belonged to Louisa Dobson in 1848, and was called the 'Old Wherry'.
Family rumours say that one of my gt gran's sisters; Elizabeth or Emma who later ran the pub died in a vat of beer!!! It'd be lovely if someone out there could  fill me in on the details!!

I don't know anything about your family unfortunately, but I can find out exactly where on Wyle Cop no. 55 is.  I have a rough idea but can't pinpoint it just yet.

I will telephone the Shropshire Archives when they are open later, to see if they can tell me. 

In the meantime I came across these while Googling!:

The second item does say "As for Wyle Cop there was the Old Wherry (No.55 – to the right of the old Mansers premises)" so that narrows it down as I know where Mansers used to be.

Thanks so much for the reply.

On the list it says that the owner of 55 Wyle Cop in 1900 was Henry Edwards....so the family is right and Henry must be  'Harry' b. 1884...who although he was only 16 in 1900 was the only remaining male offspring.

In the 1891 census it also says that The Wherry was next to the Salvation Army....so we're on the right track!

I phoned Shropshire Archives and, interestingly, when they did a search for the current occupiers of No 55 nothing came up   They are going to investigate some more and get back to me by email within 10 days.

I just hope you can wait that long

Ten days is nothing when you're investigating happenings of over 100 years ago!!!!

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will be able to tell us something ...but if not, I thank you and really appreciate your help.

I've received the following reply from the Shropshire Archives:

"Thank you for your enquiry.  I have looked at the buildings on Wyle Cop and while there is not a house numbered as 55, there is a plain white building between the shops, which may have been number 55, or part of it.  55 Wyle Cop used to be the Old Wherry Inn.  It is listed in Kelly's Directory as being run by John Edwards in 1891, Elizabeth Edwards in 1900 and then Henry Edwards between 1905 and 1926.  It is not listed after this time."

Next time I venture down Wyle Cop I'll take my digital camera with me.......

de-licensed 30th June 1928.

from 1828 onwards always called the Old Wherry,

in 1828 the carrier to Ironbridge and district went from here.
