« on: Wednesday 24 October 07 09:41 BST (UK) »
This is very complicated & I have been stuck on this for over 4 years so any help much appreciated.
Matthew Holland my Grandfather x4 greats was a Tanner lived most of his life according to census 1841-1881 in the Bermondsey area,he died 1890 st olave southwark ,the problem has been the 1841 census states he was born in Belford which is actually Retford Notts which is where most of my family are from ,I have paid for a archivist to search Retford & surrounding area ,the county records offices have also looked & found nothing of his birth ,I have also searched myself ,Matthew was married in st annes soho 1831 to Sarah Dodd(Epperstone notts) the witnesses at there wedding were John & Elizabeth Holland either Matthews brother or father ,I did find a John Holland born 1797 East Retford parents Matthew & Elizabeth Holland found nothing else.
the other census records he says he his from either Bermondsey or Westminster middlesex found nothing there either. please help  ???

Where did you find his birthplace in 1841, as the 1841 doesn't give birthplaces, only if born in or out of county. :-\

I see you must mean 1851, The 1841 does give him as born out of county (living in Surrey) so it looks like Notts maybe correct.

Sorry I had to go away & look
1841 Matthew & Sarah not of that parish which is Bermondsey but their children are & their eldest is 7
1851-Matthew was born East Retford/Sarah Epperstone -living in Bermondsey
1861-Matthew born Belford Notts (think Retford because there doesn't appear to be a place called Belford-living in Maidstone Kent/Sarah still from Epperstone.
1871-Matthew born Westminster Middlesex/sarah still  Epperstone -living back in Bermondsey.
1881-mathew born Westminster Middlesex/sarah born Heperstone(must have been posh the person who wrote this)
Westminster Middlesex,Bermondsey surrey ,or St Anne s Soho have no record of him. El
