Anybody got Flossie CATCHPOLE?
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 22:24 BST (UK) »
Flossie Catchpole, born 10th July (year unknown) appears, along with a number of other Catchpoles (Alfie, Alice, Edwin, Lilian, Wilfred - Wilfred born  1882) in a birthday book which belonged to my great aunt, Susan Taylor of Ipswich. I think they may be somehow related to either the Taylor or Elliott families. Can anyone shed light on any of these people?
thanks,
Janet

Hi Janet

The trick would be to find the family in one of the Censuses, but so far I've drawn a blank. I can't even find Wilfred's birth registration. What info have you got that might narrow down the search?

Hio folks, thanks for your input. Unfortunately I have very little to go on. The entries that appear in the birthday book mostly don't even have the year of birth. They are:
Alfred Catchpole March 27
Wilfrid Catchpole b. 3 April 1882
Flossie Catchpole July 10
Edwin F. Catchpole July 26
Alice Catchpole December 11
Lilian Irene Catchpole February 2, 1911/1913

I have a further note that Lilian's mother was a Gooding, and I have one or two other references to the name Gooding. (There is a Lilian Mabel Gooding, a Maude Gooding and a Beatrice Gooding.)

In the 1881 census, there is a James and Maria Catchpole living in Union Street, Ipswich, with two children - John Buckle (4) and Susannah Buckle (6) who are named as son and daughter (though I can't see reason for different surname, unless they were adopted?)

I have another connection with a family named Buckle - John Buckle married Ellen Susannah Collins in 1880, but that John was around 60 yrs old at that time, so unlikely to have been the father of the children living with the Catchpoles?

I know there's a connection somewhere, it's just working it out!

Edwin F. Catchpole July 26

This may be Edwin Frank Catchpole, birth reg Sep 1886 Ipswich 4a 793.  In 1901 he's in Ipswich with parents William and Mary, plus several siblings who don't match your other names:  RG13/1776 folio 42 p 23.

Previous census returns show that this couple are William L and Mary J.  The only fit for William L, born at the right time and place, is William Lanceter Catchpole, birth reg Jun 1849 Ipswich 12 391.

He seems to have married Mary Jane Ledsham, Jun 1871 Ipswich 4a 894.

There's a Lilian Mabel Gooding birth reg Dec 1883 Ipswich.

In 1891 she was with parents George and Eva (and younger sisters Alice and Catherine) in Ipswich: RG12/1473 folio 141 p29.

In 1901 she was in service in Ipswich in the household of a Samuel and Kathleen Porter: RG13/1778 folio 33 p 12.

She may or may not be the Lilian M Gooding who married Walter E. King, Sep 1919 Islington 1b 600.

This looks likely to be her parents' marriage:

George William Gooding
Eva Lina Garrod

on same page, Jun 1879 Ipswich 4a 981.
