Religious Sects 1840's Shuttleworth area
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 14:50 BST (UK) »
I've come across a working class family with some very odd names. Between the 1851 census and the births registered in Bury I've found names such as Zerah Zuriel, Zittelle, Anbah Jepherah, Eden, Alexandrina Lettilla and Hisandrina Lettilla - Dewhurst!
All I can think of is a religious sect.  Incidentally the first 3 children of the family were Catherine, Margaret and Michael.

Hi,

Some that stand out in the time frame apart from the usual Methodist, C of E etc are

Dundee Presbyterian, Ramsbottom
New Jerusalem (Swedenborgian). Ramsbottom
St Andrews Church of Scotland, Ramsbottom
Park Independant, Walmersley which seperated from Dundee in 1798 ish.

I believe Park also had a bit of a split in the 1830`s or 40`s  - the "Calvanists" went one way and another faction known as the "Armenians" moved to temporary accomodation in Whalley Road, Bank Lane.

I have just remember a useful site:

Zerah and Zuriel were taken from the Old Testament.  Some of the others look like corruptions of more usual names and could well be mistranscriptions.  Have you managed to check the original source for these names?

Thank you for your help.  I think I've got some reading to do and sooner or later it's a trip to Bury Lirary. Thanks again, Janice.
