Dismal failure that made me laugh (at myself)
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 10:15 BST (UK) »
I've have had a little chuckle to myself this morning.

Yesterday I found (browsing the web) a newspaper article about a lady who had become a true genealogy fan.  She had collected thousands of names and stories about Abingdon and had got a long way back with her own family.  As I've just discovered there are/were lots of Tuckwell's in Abingdon and I might find the Joseph I am looking for I decided to email her.  And dilligently typed out all the information I had.

It came back this morning as 'undeliverable'.  I went back to the web site to check the address - it was correct!  For no particular reason I clicked the home page button (which I hadn't noticed before) and there it was ABINGDON ILLINOIS!!!

Lesson learnt, don't get too excited and rush in feet first!
Abiam
Ps. I don't know why her email is not working just pleased it's not!

Hi Abiam,          ;D ;D ;D

At least you were looking at a real Town   :D .... when looking for Abingdon you could wind up in the model town in Australia. Nobody answers their email there, they can't reach the keyboard  ;)

I lived in Abingdon as a child and loved it.... I didn't meet your Tuckwells though.

One thing for certain in geneology - you got to have a sense of humor!

I thought I'd found my GGrandad Harris in the census and even found a picture he had drawn of his fathers boat

Till I went back and checked his birth certificate and found I'd got the wrong one

Theres a post about it on here somewhere - please dont go looking for it lol

I won't tell you th number of times I've Googled ancestors names and come across them in Brighton, Sussex and only after getting all excited have I noticed it is Brighton, Sussex County, Massachusetts or any of the other Brightons in Sussex County's over there!!!!

A guy at work who I got addicted to this hobby found a Will online the other day for someone of the right name in the right town, and was avidly reading it and making comments about how much his ancestor was worth. When I had a look to see how much the currency translated to nowadays, I noticed it had the letters "PA" at the end of the address. I hated bursting his bubble by telling him it was in Pennsylvania

We've all done it at some point - the number of times I've read through reams of information and got really excited about making a breakthrough only to find out it was about a family somewhere in America is shameful....!
