Susan/Susannah Quip - Sculcoates
« on: Sunday 21 October 07 05:25 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information regarding Susan/Susannah Quip and her ancestors.

I believe she is my 4 x great grandmother, but am unable to verify this because on the evidence I have, her name was Lambson at the time of her marriage in March 1839.  She is shown as a widow on the marriage certificate when she married James Shanks at Sutton (Sculcoates ?) in Yorkshire.

I have found a marriage between a Susan Quip and Henry Lambson in Sculcoates in 1836 and I am assuming this is the same person.

Any information anyone can find would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Dave

Hi Dave,

Doesn't it give her father's name on the marriage cert?

The children's birth certs should also tell her maiden name  :)

Unfortunately No.  On the marriage cert where her father's details should be there is only a line through each box.  On the birth certs of the children her name is shown as Susannah Shanks former Lambson.

Have you tried to find a burial for Henry Lambson between 1836 and March 1839? That would be a pretty good pointer that Susan Quip is indeed who you're looking for. I tried searching on Yorkshire BMD with no luck, so perhaps he died before civil registration started.

There's a Susan Quip in the IGI baptised 8 Jan 1816 in Sculcoates, daughter of William & Hannah ( & an earlier baptism for a Susan to the same parents on 5 March 1810 - presumably the first one died in infancy).

There's a marriage 21 May 1801 St Mary's Hull between William Quip and Hannah Watson.

Hi Jill

Thanks to help elsewhere I think we have now found Henry's death.  It is listed as Henry Lamson and occurred in September 1837 and registered in Kingston upon Hull.  This suggests to me it is the same person as Susan married, given the fact that Quip is an uncommon name.

I had the birth year for Susan as 1816 ( worked out from census info when she was married to James Shanks ) This suggests that the Susan Quip on the IGI, baptised 8 Jan 1816, is the same Susan.  I had also come to the same conclusion about the first Susan.

Yes William Quip and Hannah Watson are likely to be Susan's parents.  My only concern here is that the first child I can find born to a William Quip and Hannah, is in 1808.  This seems to me to be a long time after the marriage in 1801. However, again, given the uncommon name of Quip, William & Hannah seem likely candidates.

Not sure how I am going to progress this now, other than to send off you Henry's death certificate in the hope that Susan is shown as his wife and her maiden name is included.

Thanks for the help

Yes it's a very unusual name - not one I've come across before.

There's also an Elizabeth Quip on the IGI baptised in Sculcoates to William & Ann (surely the same couple) on 29 July 1805, so that reduces the gap a little.
