Clayton le Moors
« on: Friday 19 October 07 16:57 BST (UK) »
Are there persons on this board that have Riley and Newsham families that lived in or near Clayton le Moors btw 1900 and 1952 ?   I am specifically looking for relatives of Pharoah Riley and his wife, Amy Newsham.   They removed to Edmonton,  Alberta, Canada in 1952.  Havloc Riley is another member of that family.      Pharoah Riley served in the British Army during WW2 as an MP.

I do not know the name of the parents of Amy Newsham.

Any tidbits of info will be greatly appreciated.

Bettye

WOW !!   What a prompt response.   I am trying to assist a dght of  Pharoah Riley and Amy Newsham with her research.   This will be a great lead for her.

Much thanks from Bettye in California, USA.

Thanks again for your efforts !  I do have access to the UK censuses but I had not had time to look at them.  I just rec'd the request for help yesterday.   I have found the listing for a marriage for  Havloc  Riley in June 1903  Haslingden, Lancashire.   Now to look at a map to get the picture of the area of Clayton le Moors.

Thanks,  Bettye

Hi Bettye
Not too far away William Riley married Mary Ellen Newsham in Chorley last qtr 1908
and a bit further afield but still in Lancashire
Maud Newsham married Leonard Riley in Rochdale 2nd qtr 1919.

A bit of local knowledge this whole area was heavily involved in the cotton trade.

Best wishes
Tony

Tony,   I will pass this info along to the descendant who was born in Clayton le Moors but now lives in Canada.   I have given her all the leads now she has to do the leg work.

Thanks,  Bettye

I believe the Leonard Riley that married Maud Newsham in 1919 is my great uncle.
I am trying to find information on my mothers uncles that were in WW1. She had always said that she had 5 uncles in WW1, but were told they all died. I am finding out that is not true. For sure, 2 died, but I do believe 3 lived and 2 of the families had children, so my second cousins.
I am trying to locate this side of the family and find out if what she was told, was true.
Leonard Riley was born in 1893, was in WW1, but I believe only wounded as he married Maud Newsham in 1919. They had 2 sons, Leonard, 1920-1990 and Eric 1922-2006.
My mothers father was Reginald Riley, the 3rd son of 9 children born to Elizabeth Mitchell and Richard Riley. I believe Leonard was the 7Th son in the family. My grandfather and family came to Canada in 1911, my mother was born in Canada in 1920.
Any further information, greatly appreciated.
