beginner needs HELLPP please, thomas ROSS, elizabeth WALLACE
« on: Thursday 18 October 07 22:54 BST (UK) »
i need help  ??? on my dads side of the family i have found ancestors from ireland , not long ago, but i have detailed info on them. because of the loss of records from the the 70's i think , i cant seem to go further back. could you point me in the right direction at all. this is the only info i have;
thomas ross born 1838, drumachose, londonderry, ireland, he was a tailor and married elizabeth wallace in the parish church on 30/5/1861. She was born 1839 in the same place. their first seven children were born in the same village, their last five children (including my great gran (margaret ross)were born down the road from me(stockton on tees) so they came to england somewhere between 1872 and 1874, is there anyway i can find out why they came, how they came and where they lived and is it possible to go further back or not?? i am not very up to scratch with what everything means yet, but have used my local register office and have been on ancestry and thats about it. Please help, ( i have attatched the 1881 census for the ross family in stockton!!)many thanx claire  ;D

Welcome to Rootschat.
Not sure what you meant by records destroyed in 1970s- perhaps you are referring to census and other records destroyed in Dublin during Troubles in 1920s?
Drumachose is not a village but a townland/area outside the present town of Limavady (formerly Newtownlimavady) with an old graveyard and church ruind (few surviving gravestones just about illegible). It is also the name of a Presbyterian Church in Limavady.
Parish Church (1861 marriage) is presumably Church of Ireland?- should say this on certificate. Most likely the bride's church and may not be the church where the children were baptised. The marriage certificate should list names and occupations of both bride and groom which will help you get a step backwards. Ross is a very common surname in the Limavady area and I have several Ross deaths from the paper but no use unless you have more details like exactly where they lived.
One birth appears on IGI: Thomas Ross born 17 April 1867 Newtownlimavady (this is registration district and may not be in the town itself) however, the actual birth certificate will give exact place of birth.
No records were kept of people moving between Ireland/ Scotland/ England/ Wales.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Looks like above son Thomas died young. Found 3 more children in another source (all Newtownlimavady district):
1. female born 26 May 1865.
2. Elizabeth born 28 Apr.1868.
3. Thomas born 26 Apr.1870.

You could try writing to the Registrar c/o Limavady Council Offices, Connell St, Limavady, Co Londonderry.   For about £11 she will give you a copy of the certificate if it is present in her records - a very helpful lady.

Hi Claire,

Appreciate this is 14 years after your initial post - but I would have information for the parents of Elizabeth Wallace and all of her brothers and sisters.

Her parents were Thomas Wallace, Drumachose parish (born 1815 died 1885) and Elizabeth Donaghy b1809 d1889 (also Drumachose parish).

She had three brothers Joseph, James and John and two sisters Rebecca and Jane.

Joseph worked in Glasgow for most of his life before returning to Limavady.  Jane died quite young.  Rebecca, James and John never married and lived together in Limavady.

Joseph, Rebecca, James and John are buried together in a graveyard in Limavady. Obviously you know Elizabeth Wallace married Ross and moved to Stockton and had a big family.

I'm working hard on finding further back than Thomas Wallace but - whilst I feel I'm getting closer I don't have any confirmed information.

If you want any further info on any of the above just let me know.

Stephen
