Newspaper archives - Swaffham?
« on: Wednesday 17 October 07 01:22 BST (UK) »
Hi

I don't suppose anybody knows where I might find newspaper reports for 1854 around the Swaffham area?

My gr x4 grandfather apparently came to a sticky end on 6 May 1854.  He was accidentally burnt to death in a state of intoxication :o

The informant on the death cert was Charles Wright, Coroner in Litcham.  He was a higgler, aged 58.  It says he died on London Road, Swaffham.

He was married, with children, and lived at Great Cressingham, but there's no mention of his wife on the certificate.  Maybe she had thrown him out - had enough  :-\

I know a lot of records are kept at Norfolk record office, but I would have a problem getting there.  I would appreciate it if anybody could help

Rosemary ;D

Newspapers on microfilm are kept at the Millennium Library in Norwich.  There are very few newspapers online and they tend to be the well known papers like The Times, The Guardian and Observer.

Hi Princess Poppy

Thanks for replying.  Do many people do look-ups at the Millenium Library?  I've never seen it mentioned on here.  Is it worth asking in a thread?

Hi Subaru,

There's no guarantee your relative will be in the newspaper but it's always worth a look.

Ask the Rootschatter admin if they have anything for lookups at the library.

The alternative is to contact the library for a look up (they may make a charge) or a researcher.

Cheers, PP

Hi PP

I sent off for membership to Norfolk Family History Society last week, so I might wait and see if anyone can do a look-up from there.  That's when I eventually hear from them - maybe still the postal strike.

I thought it might help in my research.

Thanks for the help

Rosemary

I wonder if this is worth a try?  I don't know if they carry old newspapers but they can only say No.

Details for Swaffham Library.

For further information please telephone (01760) 721513 or send an email to swaffham.lib@norfolk.gov.uk

I know that they have newspapers at Norwich because I've used them myself and they cover the whole of Norfolk.

Did you know they filmed the TV programme Kingdom at Swaffham!?  ;D
