Mother born Edinburgh. Family names <McMahon . Hall
« on: Monday 15 October 07 21:49 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
Where would my sister start in her research for family in Edinburgh.
Our mother came to NZ as a war bride in 1945 and all we know is she lived in the West Port, her father was Hugh McMahon and mother Mary Hall.
Ive been doing internet research for 2 years on another side of family and had great luck, but wouldnt have a clue what to do in person.
Any suggestions very welcome
Sheldon.

Hi Sheldon,

The starting place should be http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk where for a fee you will be able to download a copy of the 1925 marriage of Hugh McMahon and Mary Hall. That should give the ages of the couple and the names of both sets of parents, including the mothers' maiden surnames. If the bride and grome were born pre-1907 in Scotland then their birth certificates should be available there. Then the marriage certificates for the parents and so on.

Online access to birth certificates are covered by a 100 year closure rule; marriage certificates for 75 years; and death certificates for 50 years. So your mother's birth certificate is not available online, but can be ordered from the General Register Office for Scotland. See http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/hlpsrch/leaflet2.html for details.

Many thanks ADP, as a researcher I should have been aware of that, but having to point my sister in the right direction in Edinburgh is another story.  I will pass on all info to her as it comes in.
Much thanks
Sheldon.

Hi Sheldon,

In 1901 Census, at 8 Malloch’s Close Canongate Edinburgh

Hugh McMahon 32 b 1869 Edinburgh Midlothian – Brewery Labourer
Catherine McMahon 26 b 1875 Edinburgh Midlothian Wife
Hugh Patrick McMahon 10 month’s b 1900 Edinburgh Midlothian

As census was 31 March 1901 and he was 10 months old, he would be born in May 1900.

On ancestry, there are 5 Mary Halls born just before turn of century, not sure what one, but marriage certificate should give parent’s name
