1851 Lookup of Walworth/Newington
« on: Thursday 23 December 04 19:32 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to locate my gt2 grandfather and have found him living at 84 Hill Street, Peckham on the 1871 Census.

I would like to find him in 1851 or 1861 as he should have my gt grandfather living with him.
Name: Stephen George West born 1814 at Pentonville but he may also have put down Brentford, Ealing or Battlesbridge. Solicitor's clerk or agent, sometimes surveyor or broker!
Wife: Mary West formerly Jones born circa 1819.
Known Children:
Henry George West born circa 1838 probably Camberwell
John West born circa 1846 also Camberwell

I have checked the 1851 Name Index of Camberwell but with no luck (not strictly true as I found Stephen's Dad also Stephen Geo West born Brentford 1790! :) ) so there is a possibility the family were in Walworth/Newington.

I'd be grateful for any help. Merry Christmas!
Michelle

Hi Michelle,
I looked on the 1851 census for Hill Street but couldn't find a West family.  Hill Street existed in 1851 but didn't seem to extend to No. 84, but the census I have is quite faint and difficult to read.
Do you have more address details for Stephen's father?
Maybe I can track him down.
Regards,
Leodis

Hi,
Thanks for your response to my call for help. Stephen's father was living at 2 Southampton Street, St Giles Camberwell in 1851 with his second wife Hannah (born Colchester) and their children: Harriatt, Mariah, George, John, Jane, Henrietta. The reference is HO107/1582, but unfortunately I do not have the folio nor the ED. I have checked the RDs for Camberwell, but I could not locate Stephen Jnr - however Walworth/Newington appear to be unindexed so I could not check that area. I was hoping someone might have something!

Thanks, Michelle

Browsing through this website, I saw the names WEST and WINDLEY linked in this correspondance. My g grandmother was Harriet WEST, who I have as b 1836 Camberwell and m Theodore WINDLEY in 1858. I would be very interested to hear if there is a link.
